A psychological crime drama based on actual events of the not-too-distant past. A group of university students thought it would be entertaining to abduct girls and gang rape them. Out of fear, none of the victims talked. A female student, however, didn't want to remain silent. The kidnappers drew lots to decide which of them would become a murderer. At dawn they dragged the girl off to a lake and drowned her. They terrified the witnesses and severed all contact among themselves. It took the police several years to find the necessary clues. In the meantime, some of the perpetrators began raising families, even became model citizens. Their parents used every means possible to fight the evidence, heedless of the victims' suffering, motivated only by the need to save their children, their reputations, their position in society. As I was reading some of these comments that are often nearing 10 years of age, it made me think; was the audience back then way more lenient with Czech movies or are Czech movies on a completely different level nowadays? Because Bolero is a complete pile of bull crap where the main characters talk out of their asses, the side characters play something every now and then and the story is about as usual as a trip to the Moon.

Sämtliche Probleme in Verbindung mit Bolero bestehen im Sujet. Hier hat sich F. A. Brabec auf zu dünnes Eis begegen. Er hat einen Kriminalfall gewählt, der bis heute ungeklärt ist und von unerklärlichen Rätseln und Widersprüchen umrankt wird, wahrscheinlich werden wir nie erfahren, wie es damals in Bratislava wirklich zugegangen ist. Der tschechische Ombudsmann Otakar Motejl hatte sich in diesem Fall engagiert und in einem Interview erklärt, dies sei einer der seltsamsten Fälle seiner Karriere gewesen. F. A. Brabec übertrug die Handlung ins heutige Prag, setzte die Anzahl der angeblichen Täter herab, doch die Ähnlichkeit liegt einfach auf der Hand und ist sicher für alle Beteiligten schmerzlich. Ich verstehe Martin Stropnický nicht, der die Rolle des Ermittlers übernommen hat, denn einer der wegen Vergewaltigung Beschuldigten war angeblich sein Mitschüler, und infolge der Strafverfolgung brach bei ihm eine Geisteskrankheit aus. Es ist kurz gesagt ein kontroverses Thema, wenn das Sujet ausgedacht wäre, wäre alles anders, weil die Musik, die Leistung von Barbora Seidlová und die Kamera zweifellos ein Plus dieses Streifens darstellen.

A pretty good Czech crime drama, but unfortunately far from being truly great. It's just that the police officers' handling seemed so strange, random to me. Brabec concentrated more on atmosphere and individual shots, which worked well. The case itself is gritty, which adds a lot to it, and the final revelation of the whole scene really hits the viewer.
