Eigentlich wollte der Schriftsteller Andrew Craig die Reise nach Stockholm gar nicht antreten. Doch die 200.000 Kronen für die Verleihung des Literatur-Nobelpreises kann Craig gut gebrauchen, denn seine Bücher gehen schlecht. Andrew ist zum verbitterten Trinker geworden, der seit einigen Jahren eher durch seine Alkoholexzesse als durch seine Literatur von sich Reden macht, weswegen das schwedische Außenministerium ihm als Anstandsdame die hübsche Inger Lisa zuteilt. Inger kann jedoch nicht verhindern, dass Craig gleich bei der ersten Pressekonferenz die Reporter mit der Enthüllung schockt, dass er sich unter Pseudonym als Autor von Schundliteratur verdingt. Als Craig dem in den USA lebenden deutschen Physik-Nobelpreisträger Max Stratman wieder begegnet, wundert er sich, dass der freundliche Wissenschaftler sich plötzlich schroff benimmt und sich auch nicht mehr an das kurze Gespräch vom Vorabend erinnert. Ein anonymer Anrufer bittet Craig in eine Stockholmer Wohnung, wo der Schriftsteller einen Sterbenden vorfindet, der ihm den Namen eines Schiffes mitteilt. Kurz darauf wird Craig aus dem Stockholmer Kanal gefischt. Da Craig sich bereits einige Martinis genehmigt hat, glaubt niemand an die Geschichte des betrunkenen Amerikaners. Doch als der amerikanische Medizin-Preisträger Dr. John Garrett beiläufig berichtet, er habe in einem Krankenhaus offenbar einen Doppelgänger von Professor Stratman gesehen, setzt Craig seine Nachforschungen fort.
