Der kriegserprobte Colonel Ludlow (Anthony Hopkins) hat sich mit seinen drei Söhnen Alfred (Aidan Quinn), Tristan (Brad Pitt) und Samuel (Henry Thomas) auf eine entlegene Farm in Montana zurückgezogen. Als der erste Weltkrieg ausbricht, melden sich die Söhne an die Front. Susannah (Julia Ormond), Samuels attraktive Verlobte, bleibt mit dem Colonel zurück. Sie wird Samuel niemals wiedersehen, er fällt im blutigen Krieg. Tristan fühlt sich verantwortlich und verschwindet für einige Jahre. Er kehrt zurück als gerissener Pferdehändler und Alkoholschmuggler. Alfred, mittlerweile in die Politik eingestiegen, muß ihm das Handwerk legen und wird sein größter Rivale - auch im Kampf um Susannahs Liebe. Ein Konflikt mit tödlichen Konsequenzen.
