Im Zentrum von Downtown Los Angeles liegt das Million Dollar Hotel. Es ist Zuhause und Zufluchtsort für schräge Gestalten und Außenseiter, die am American Dream nicht teilhaben. Einer von ihnen ist Tom Tom (Jeremy Davies), der sein Herz an das Straßenmädchen Eloise (Milla Jovovich) verloren hat. Bevor er jedoch seine Zuneigung zeigen kann, wird das Million Dollar Hotel zum Schauplatz eines mysteriösen Verbrechens. Als der kompromisslose FBI-Agent Skinner (Mel Gibson) im Hotel auftaucht, um den Fall schonungslos aufzuklären, werden alle Hotelbewohner zu Mordverdächtigen. (Arthaus/Studiocanal)

Psychedelic nonsense. Boring, unintentionally ridiculous in places. And I still think U2 is the best rock-pop band of all time.

The three pretentious stars are rather a satisfied evaluation. Wenders creates an atmosphere through captivating monologues and great camera work, while Gibson and Davies give their characters an incredible liveliness. However, the total disappointment for the viewer is the screenplay. Instead of a psychologically tuned game or at least a genre-unidentified combination, it simply jumps from place to place and indulges in peculiar characters. And I consider it a great sin that the much-promoted U2 accompaniment is not used to its full potential, as it only faintly murmurs in the background, except for the opening and closing credits.

The Million Dollar Hotel hat mich so fasziniert, dass ich es mir am nächsten Tag noch einmal anschauen musste. Das Hotel, in dem ein Mord untersucht wird, voller seltsamer Figuren und Gestalten, ist ein Ort, wo ein seltsames Gefühl entstehen kann. Den Satz von Milly Jovovich: "Ich existiere nicht, ich bin fiktiv", werde ich nie vergessen :-) Und neben Werbespots für das Parfüm von Calvin Klein liefert sie hier ihre beste schauspielerische Leistung ab :-) Und mein Liebling Tim Roth setzt mit seinem einminütigen Auftritt am Ende allem die Krone auf.
