"Shaft" ist mit einer explosiven Fortsetzung zurück: Mitten in der Nacht kontaktiert Cal Asby seinen Freund John Shaft, weil er offenbar in der Klemme steckt - kurz darauf kommt der Bestattungsunternehmer durch eine Bombe ums Leben. Asby war mit dem Mafiosi Gus Mascola in illegale Geschäfte verwickelt, und auch sein Partner Kelly scheint in der Sache drinzuhängen. Shaft ermittelt gewohnt skrupellos auf eigene Faust - und gerät dabei selbst unter Tatverdacht. (kabel eins)

Given the reputation that precedes this famed blaxploitation piece, I expected more. The film is based on a supposedly terrible novel, which may explain things. I was expecting more fun, more B-movie flavour, more violence, nudity and action, which came to the fore only at the end, when the film culminates in a 15-minute chase (which swallowed more money than the rest of the movie together) with two cars, a helicopter and a speedboat. Otherwise, there’s not much going on, really. Now, I’m not saying Shaft is slacking off. In one lean, macho scene, he picks up a bimbo in 10 seconds, then shoots down a helicopter with a shotgun, but otherwise… the expectations were high, but went unfulfilled.

"It's still pretty tough, there are great lines here and also quite a lot of sex, which pleasantly livens it up because it's nicely casual and it fits great. The story is nothing special, but for Shaft, it's exactly the right reason to be able to properly shoot someone, which also happens at the end."
