Das Haus der lachenden Fenster

Avati drehte nur selten Horrorfilme, aber wenn er sich für dieses Genre entschied, feierte er Erfolge, zumindest was die Fans betrifft. The House with Laughing Windows ist kein klassischer Giallo, in dem ein maskierter Mörder mit schwarzen Handschuhen wütet. Seine stärkste Seite ist die Atmosphäre des Dorfes mitten im Sumpf, dessen Bewohner Geheimnisse verbergen. Der Zuschauer spürt einfach, dass nicht alles in Ordnung ist. Die Spannung nagt zwischendurch an den Nägeln und immer mehr wird klar, dass das Böse hier eine unerwartete, ungreifbare Gestalt hat. Das Finale ist absolut ausgezeichnet, schade nur um den Mittelteil, in dem nichts passiert. Ansonsten erscheint mir der Titel sinnlos irreführend. (27.10.2011)

Pupi Avati directed a film that has a good atmosphere and is able to keep you tense throughout. "The House with Laughing Windows" is a film that has a somewhat slow pace, weak progression, but it is not necessarily to the detriment of the story. The plot is quite interesting enough to deserve your attention. Additionally, something strange is constantly happening, which occasionally catches you off guard. The peculiar characters only contribute to the overall impression, where you simply don't know what to expect. It is a more restrained, but definitely not a bad giallo. (18.10.2014)

If I add all the good bits: about three scary scenes, a decent script, the atmosphere of a remote Italian village, and a fairly effective (though quite predictable) twist, my rating still won’t go further than those strong three stars. The middle part of the film, at least, is simply boring. The House with Laughing Windows  is slightly above par, for sure, but the odes as a wonder, if not the best Eurohorror film feel like something from an alternative world that never saw Phenomena, The House That Screamed or Who Can Kill a Child? 7/10 (06.03.2009)
