Let Them Eat Cake was a 1999 British comedy series set in 1782 in the Palace of Versailles, as a helpful title card points out every episode, during the reign of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. Lasting a grand total of one six-episode series in 1999, it starred Jennifer Saunders as the amoral Colombine, Comtesse de Vache, with Dawn French and Adrian Scarborough as her maid Lisette and foppish manservant Bouffant, respectively.
Idle and rich, Colombine spends her days cataloging the debaucheries of her fellow palace-mates for blackmail purposes, as she has not herself had the chance to debauch as of late and is always looking for a chance to get in good with the royals. Lisette's job is to keep the Comtesse going all hours of the day, only stepping out to have her own debaucherous relations with various men, noble, soldier, and peasant. Meanwhile, Bouffant's hard work keeps her at the forefront of gaudy French fashion, whether it be a dress or a large battleship-adorned wig appropriate for viewing public royal copulation. Unfortunately, those outside the palace walls are already starting to revolt.

I became aware of the existence of the series when I accidentally came across an enthusiastic comment comparing it to the successful series The Black Adder. Intrigued, I watched the first episode and encountered straightforward cheap humor, sometimes truly coarse. I quickly lost interest in continuing to watch because it doesn't come close to the qualities of The Black Adder. Provocative topics can be handled without resorting to vulgarity, it just takes sensitivity, the ability to stop in time, and to only imply and play with words and situational comedy. The truth is, even the aforementioned Black Adder was searching throughout the entire first series, but it was never bad. I give the overall impression of the first episode 25%, with the possibility that I might eventually find a star to add to it in the other episodes. But there are plenty of better works, so why waste time on this...

Zwei Folgen (insbesondere Murder aber auch The Royal Command Performance) sind teuflisch toll. Die anderen vier sind aber auch sehr gut. Nur dass sich in ihnen der Humor manchmal zu sehr wiederholt und ein wenig einfach ist. Blackadder gibt es kurz und gut nur einmal. Wenn Sie aber Lust auf niederträchtige Intrigantinnen haben, die vor nichts zurückschrecken, kann ich ihnen Let Them Eat Cake nur empfehlen.
