Hawaii im Sommer 1941. Aus Protest gegen eine Personalentscheidung lässt sich Korporal Robert Lee Prewitt (Montgomery Clift) als einfacher Soldat in eine Infanterie-Kompanie versetzen. Dort soll er nach dem Willen von Captain Holmes (Philip Ober) die Boxstaffel verstärken. Aber Prewitt hat dem Boxsport abgeschworen und bleibt trotz Schikanen des Captains bei seinem Entschluss. Der Außenseiter findet nur bei Sgt. Warden (Burt Lancaster) Respekt und in dem Gefreiten Angelo Maggio (Frank Sinatra) einen Freund. Dann verliebt sich Sgt. Warden in Karen (Deborah Kerr), die vereinsamte Frau von Captain Holmes, und setzt damit seine Karriere aufs Spiel. Als Angelo von einem sadistischen Vorgesetzten zu Tode geprügelt wird, nimmt Prewitt Rache und desertiert. Doch dann greifen die Japaner Pearl Harbor an. (Sky Cinema)

A great classic that fully deserves the label. A strong story, excellent actors and the constant threat of war hanging in the air, which finally strikes and shakes everything up. The film would have greatly benefited from a more lavish widescreen format.

Currently, it is no longer a film that works as well as it did sixty years ago. It is a response to Pearl Harbor, but also to the problems that existed and still exist in the army. Montgomery Clift once again shows what a great actor he was and how well he was watched in every role. Men, in general, take the lead in this film, both in terms of acting and not just quantitatively.
