Missä kuljimme kerran (2011)

Englisch I’m always quite looking forward to Finnish movies. Their films are special, as is the whole nation. This film also appealed to me all the more because I thought I would learn more about their generally quite turbulent past. The film actually explained to me that between the two world wars, the Finns were fed up with communists and Russians, so part of the population clung to the fascists. If nothing else, I would give the Finns the Nobel Prize for choosing the right political ideology for their nation. They really couldn’t have chosen better. But to these interesting political intrigues, the creators added some awkward love story, which I really didn’t enjoy. Overall, the story was weird, and I had a problem to finish the whole two-hour-long movie. But I was happy with the Finnish language, which sometimes switched into Swedish. If it was due to historical development, then the creators incorporated it quite nicely. But that’s probably the only significant positive to the whole film.

Viva Riva! (2010)

Englisch An interesting peek into the life in the Congo. But for me, this peek was incomprehensible and difficult to digest. It’s definitely an interesting movie, but it’s definitely not something I would choose to watch next time. Brutality, aggression and cruel reality all in one film make for a quite challenging watching experience.

Der Pate 2 (1974)

Englisch This mafia opus confirms its quality in the second part as well. Although Al Pacino is not Marlon Brando, the whole story of one mob family is still absolutely incredible. The five-star rating is indisputable here. Where else will a director offer you a better insight into the life of mobsters than in this film?

Der Gestiefelte Kater (2011)

Englisch I like cats, so I just can’t rate this worse than this. Not to mention the fact that this animated movie is really quite well-done. The ideas, the temperament of Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek and even the story itself? You won’t get to see those things just in every other animated movie released nowadays.

Arn – Der Tempelritter (2007)

Englisch The most expensive Swedish film ever made. That’s quite appealing, isn’t it? That’s also why I was quite looking forward to watching this film and happy that it finally happened. I liked the medieval atmosphere. The story had its charm and both the war atmosphere and the relationship tangles blended beautifully. It all fit together nicely, and even though some events might have been changed to fit the film better, I’m glad that I could be, at least in film, part of Swedish history and learn a little more about it. At least I learned who Arn was.

Isolerad (2012)

Englisch Personally, I must say that I was quite satisfied. I wish Cinemax offered more such films. Friday night, you don’t know what to watch and they offer this piece of perfect filmmaking. The idea is actually very interesting, but very hard to believe. That’s also why I’m not giving this five stars. But it still kept me in suspense more than a lot of horror movies, and that’s why it definitely deserves attention. With this review, I would also like to thank those who translate these films for us. Cinemax is a great channel that offers great movies. But it occurs to me that those self-proclaimed film lovers who are here on the database are not even interested in really interesting films. They’d rather play some American crap than give a chance to pieces that have almost no rating here. This website might seem full of movie buffs, but a few days after the premiere there are only five ratings. The film definitely deserves more attention and hopefully it will get it too.

Der Pate (1972)

Englisch The Godfather is the ultimate gangster movie; there’s hardly anything more to add. Marlon Brando is spectacular and not even Al Pacino can surpass him. This is mainly because Marlon Brando’s performance is perhaps one of the greatest acting performances I have ever experienced in a film. Excellent from start to finish. Although the film has 175 minutes, what is it compared to one decade of in the lives of a mobster family, which is everything but boring.

New Best Friend (2002)

Englisch Cinemax lured me to a lesbian party, and then I just couldn’t wrap my head around how awful this movie really was. “Indifference”, which is this movie’s Czech title, is a quality that I essentially hate, but on the other hand it is an exact quality of the feeling I am currently experiencing towards this film.

Die Schlümpfe (2011)

Englisch I don’t want to talk shit about the Smurfs. As a kid, I rather liked them. For this reason, I was quite curious about the movie adaptation. And I must say that it didn’t bother me. In my opinion, it will make children very happy, and the adults will be able to chill with it. What more could you want? By the way, did you also think about how damn hard it must be for Smurfette in that gang? Well, the most important thing is that she knows how to cook macaroni and when the water should be properly salted...

Live Flesh - Mit Haut und Haar (1997)

Englisch Pedro Almodóvar is not one of my favorite directors. But when I stumbled into this movie for an umpteenth time on Cinemax and saw Penélope Cruz giving birth in the bus, I decided to finish watching this. And I must say that it’s not that bad. A strange mix of love, relationships and the sometimes fateful problems related to that. Definitely a standard from Almodóvar, but for me a film that I have to watch on a special opportunity, otherwise I’d get bored pretty quickly.
