Der siebenjährige Amish-Junge Samuel Lapp wird Zeuge eines Mordes. Da er der einzige Zeuge war, ist er für die ermittelnden Polizisten von besonderer Bedeutung. Detective John Book (Harrison Ford) leitet die Ermittlungen. Doch kaum haben die Nachforschungen begonnen, kommt es zu einem bedrohlichen Zwischenfall, bei dem John verletzt wird. Um die Ermittlungen verdeckt fortzuführen und den Jungen und seine Mutter Rachel (Kelly McGillis) zu beschützen, taucht er mit den beiden in der Amish-Gemeinschaft unter. Das einfache Leben der Religionsgemeinschaft, das sich an vorindustriellen Standards orientiert, bedeutet für den Großstädter Book ein Eintauchen in eine völlig fremde Welt. Er gewöhnt sich jedoch schnell ein, besonders als er sich in Rachel verliebt. Die wird allerdings auch von Amish-Bruder Daniel (Alexander Godunow) umworben. Und das ist nicht Johns einziges Problem, denn schon bald trachten die Bösewichte dem einzigen Zeugen nach dem Leben. (ZDFneo)
