Viscontis düsteres Sittengemälde von Verrat und Dekadenz in der Abenddämmerung der nationalsozialistischen Herrschaft.Vom Reichstagsbrand bis zur “Nacht der langen Messer”, in der Hitler seine Feinde in den eigenen Reihen liquidieren wollte, spannt sich das blutige Epos von Unmoral und Niedergang des Dritten Reiches in beklemmender Wirklichkeitsnähe.Dirk Bogarde ist ein moderner McBeth, der souverän und rücksichtslos die Herrschaft über das deutsche Stahl-Imperium gewinnt, während Hitlers Aufstieg an die Macht beginnt. Helmut Griem spielt einen SA-Führer, dessen dummes, machtergreiferisches Gehabe ein jähes Ende findet, als er in der “Nacht der langen Messer” von der SS hingeschlachet wird.
