(KinoweltTV)

Englisch Film about the search for love and defining its boundaries. Less hardworking and reliable Wilbur, who also suffers from depression and various neuroses, is much more successful in gaining human sympathy and the favor of women than his older brother. A similar motif of love rivalry between two brothers appeared in Czech cinema, for example in the film "House for Two," where (more convincingly) the main roles were played by Jiří Schmitzer and Ondřej Vetchý. In comparison to the previous Italian for Beginners, I evaluate this film by Scherfig somewhat more critically. The main reason is the not very credible portrayal of the characters and their relationships. What is it that fascinates all women about Wilbur, whom they constantly drag out of the bathtub or cut off from the chandelier, is somewhat of a mystery. Everyone probably knows likeable players who are completely unsuitable for ordinary family life and yet attract women incredibly. However, Wilbur lacks their provocativeness and vitality. Nonetheless, the director's signature is evident and the film is a good choice for those who enjoy psychological nuances. Overall impression: 65%. ()
