Unerklärliche Badeunfälle häufen sich in dem beschaulichen Küstenstädtchen Amity. Schnell wird Polizeichef Brody klar, dass ein monströser Weißer Hai sein Unwesen treibt. Doch die Honoratioren der Stadt wollen die Vorfälle unter den Teppich kehren, um den guten Ruf des Badeorts nicht zu gefährden. Das beschauliche Städtchen Amity an der amerikanischen Ostküste gerät plötzlich in Panik, als sich unerklärliche Badeunfälle mehren. Ein junges Mädchen ist das erste Opfer, das beim nächtlichen Schwimmen von einem unbekannten Meeresungetüm in Stücke gerissen wird. Doch sie bleibt nicht die Einzige. Bald wird klar, dass es sich bei dem Ungetüm um einen monströsen weißen Hai handelt, dessen Attacken auf die Badegäste immer dreister werden. Doch die Honoratioren der Stadt wollen diese blutigen Zwischenfälle am liebsten unter den Teppich kehren, um den guten Ruf des Touristenstädtchens nicht zu gefährden. Darum werden Polizeichef Martin Brody bei seinen Maßnahmen gegen den Mörderfisch immer wieder Steine in den Weg gelegt. Doch als sich die Zwischenfälle nicht mehr bagatellisieren lassen, startet Brody zusammen mit dem Meeresbiologen Hooper und dem brummigen Seebären Quint einen erbarmungslosen und gefährlichen Feldzug gegen das Ungetüm. Auf hoher See kommt es zwischen den drei Männern und dem gigantischen Raubfisch zu einem Kampf auf Leben und Tod. (RTL II)
