In der kleinen amerikanischen Provinzgemeinde Santa Mira gehen seltsame Dinge vor: Unzählige kleine Samenkapseln regnen plötzlich in einer kleinen Stadt vom Himmel. Sie wachsen, platzen auf und spucken eine menschenähnliche Kreatur aus. Während die Bewohner schlafen, schlüpfen die Außerirdischen heimlich in ihre Körper und vernichten ihre Seele. Fieberhaft betreiben sie die Verwandlung der Bewohner. Bis bald nur noch gefühls- und herzlose Roboter die Stadt beherrschen. Und sie haben nur ein Ziel: sich möglichst rasch auszubreiten.
