The Living Dead Girl

Despite the questionable quality of the beginning, where the theatrical delivery of the first three victims is somewhere in the realm of amateur attempts at horror, I ended up liking The Living Dead Girl very much and it almost took my breath away with its depth. Even if it doesn’t look like that at first sight, this is one of the smartest horror films I’ve had the honour of watching. The joke is that, like in The Raisins of Death, the evil creature is partially aware of its existence and its actions, which leads to an interesting comparison with the actions of the good creature, represented by the loving sister, who is driven by what? Chemikalien aus Fässern entwichen noch drei Jahre vor der kultigen Rückkehr der lebenden Toten. Damals war es im sonnigen Frankreich und sie erweckten zwar nur ein Mädchen zum Leben, aber es war hungriger. Ihre liebevolle Schwester ließ sie jedoch nicht im Stich und begann schnell, frisches Fleisch zu beschaffen... Rollins Film, ähnlich wie im Fall von Grapes of Death, versucht eine gewisse Bedeutung zu haben (diesmal dank der Haupt-Zombie-Heldin, die beginnt, ihr Fluch des ewigen Hungers zu erkennen) und das Ende ist deshalb ziemlich deprimierend, leider ist es irgendwo in der Mitte stecken geblieben. Und es ist schwer zu sagen, ob es an der Abwesenheit einer roheren Atmosphäre lag oder an der spürbaren Dehnung einiger Szenen. (07.10.2013)
