Die dänische Baronin Blixen betreibt in Kenia eine Kaffeeplantage, als ihr untreuer Mann sie mit Syphilis infiziert. Dann lernt sie die Liebe ihres Lebens kennen, einen englischen Abenteurer. Eine Molkerei und Kühe hatte sie erwartet, doch vor ihr liegt das Land für eine Kaffeeplantage: Tania Blixen ist kurz vor Beginn des Ersten Weltkriegs ihrem Mann, dem dänischen Baron Bror Blixen, nach Afrika gefolgt. Die Eheschließung der beiden erfolgte unter rationalen Gesichtspunkten - im verschneiten Dänemark hatten sie pragmatisch die Eckpunkte ihrer Ehe verhandelt. Trotz aller Anfangsschwierigkeiten lebt Tania sich gut ein. Bror ist kein Kind von Traurigkeit. Dennoch ist Tania schockiert, als bei ihr eine schwere Syphilis diagnostiziert wird - ihr Mann hat sie angesteckt. Tania muss Afrika verlassen und sich im fernen Dänemark einer Behandlung unterziehen. Nach Kenia zurückgekehrt, nimmt sie den Kontakt zu dem englischen Großwildjäger Denys Finch Hatton wieder auf. Was als flüchtige Begegnung in der Steppe begann, wird für die unabhängige Frau zur Liebe ihres Lebens. Silvester 1918/19 tanzt Tania mit Denys in das neue Jahr, und aus der Luft zeigt ihr der begeisterte Flieger die Schönheit des afrikanischen Kontinents. Aber Denys ist ein Abenteurer. Nach dem Ende des Ersten Weltkriegs und dem Verbot des Elfenbeinhandels organisiert er Safaris für Touristen. Oft ist er wochenlang unterwegs. Aber auch, wenn er bei Tania ist, sucht er keine konventionelle Bindung. Immer wieder muss sie von ihm Abschied nehmen, doch er kehrt auch immer wieder zurück - bis er eines Tages mit dem Flugzeug abstürzt. Nun sind auch Tanias Tage in Afrika gezählt. (3sat)

Beautiful shots of Africa are alternating with at times infantile behavior of Meryl Streep, trapped in a vicious love circle. However, due to the fairytale-like impression, beautiful shots of Africa, beautiful music and epic ending, Out of Africa really belongs to the golden fund of cinematography.

Beautiful in the exteriors, in the music, in the screenplay, and in the tangible chemistry of the main couple. Slightly diluted in unnecessary side lines that harm the urgency of the present feeling. However, thanks to the airplane, hair washing, and "I want you so badly", an unforgettable achievement that has changed my thoughts with its nostalgic resonance for a long time. 90%

The first great romantic-adventure film of its kind. All other films that came later practically copied more or less this new style that Sydney Pollack introduced. A legend, a must-see.

Out of Africa is one of those films that’s probably impossible to rate badly. Although I was not personally captivated by it and it took me quite a while to feel comfortable with its slow pace, the love story had its charm and I finished it without any problems. Moreover, with actors like Streep and Redford, Sydney Pollack's harmonious and precise direction, and the breathtaking and romantic setting of Africa, everything sounds somehow more real, more loving and sad. 80%

The accent with which Meryl speaks here is really awful, and I simply don't understand this American obsession with accents. It doesn't matter whether she speaks English or weird English, she still speaks English... Robert Redford is classically great, but in this film, Africa is simply the best. That's what it's all about, and the rest is just fluff.
