The era around the year 2000, when films with mysterious themes were popular in a similar fashion to action B-movies of the 1980s, is thankfully behind us, considering this film. The scriptwriting flaw that afflicted many films of this wave, the relentless desire to shock in the finale, unfortunately manifests itself here as well. Despite the solid plot built on a not-so-original foundation, it is elevated to a much higher level thanks to its technical execution. The camera work, which effectively and efficiently switches positions, swoops in, or slowly creeps, is top-notch. The same is true of the editing, the sound, and, last but not least, the music. Using these tools, which are utilized to the fullest extent, the director succeeds in building an exceptional atmosphere of fear. However, in the second half, due to the flawed screenplay and consequently inevitable stretching, the tension starts to dissipate. Despite its formal perfection, the ending becomes a profane mockery. However, the memories of the "angels" are so strong and evocative that a three-star rating feels tailor-made for this film. (14.01.2006)

In der ersten Hälfte ist die Atmosphäre des Films wirklich eindringlich und emotional verheerend - Mothman greift an mit kurzen Schnitten, verstörend unfertigen Aufnahmen, die anderswo zu Ende gespielt worden wären, und nervigen Soundtracks. Die Vagheit und Mehrdeutigkeit, mit der sich die Geschichte abspielt, trägt dazu bei, dass man sich in die vielversprechend verworrene Handlung einfühlen kann, und führt die Erwartungen leider ad absurdum. Nach der Spannung kommt jedoch die Enttäuschung - ausnahmsweise nicht, weil der Ursprung des Rätsels etwas Peinliches ist (Mothman wird mich noch lange in meinen Träumen verfolgen), sondern einfach, weil das Rätsel in traditioneller Hollywood-Manier verwendet wird. Vom Ton her erinnerte mich Mothman Prophecies irgendwie an eine Thrillerversion von Ghost - Nachricht von Sam, und das ist, seien wir ehrlich, ein ziemlich furchtbarer Eindruck. Mark Pellington kann seine Besessenheit von Requisiten während des gesamten Films nicht kontrollieren, und die zweite Hälfte ist überdreht, überkomponiert und tragisch unterentwickelt. Was anfangs als beunruhigende Andeutung diente, fungiert am Ende nur noch als überflüssiges Requisit, dessen Einsatz durch die Andersartigkeit der Phantomwelt "erklärt" wird. Ein echtes Alibi. Auch die Darbietungen sind eher schwach und verkommen mit der Zeit zu überzogenen Tiraden ohne Überzeugungskraft. Schade, hätten Pellington und Co. die große Spannung des Anfangs beibehalten und sich nicht dazu verleiten lassen, eine ohnehin schon starke Geschichte noch weiter auszubauen, wäre dies ein Thriller von höchster Qualität geworden. Doch selbst in dieser Form übertreffen die Spannung und die Intensität der Angst bei weitem die schrecklichsten Aufnahmen von The Sixth Sense. (15.01.2006)

An exciting thriller, which starts quite interestingly, has quite good characters, but as it gradually approaches the climax, weak points in the story appear that are not adequately fulfilled. Richard Gere is excellent, Laura Linney is underutilized, overall it's sort of halfway with a slight leaning towards the positive. (21.07.2015)
