On a snowy back road in New England, police harass a drifter, only to be thrown violently through the air by an unseen force. Clearly, they've picked the wrong man to hassle. Taken into custody, the loner is identified as Zack Connors, a man with a blessing – and a curse – that makes him of particular interest to the seemingly sympathetic Dr. Slovak, a specialist on Zack's condition. Zack finds himself in Slovak's institute alongside others with similar telekinetic abilities, but the doctor's intentions are quickly found to be diabolical. Struggling to overcome the effects of drugs used to suppress his powers, Zack is desperate to find his friend and fellow psychokinetic Rachel, whom he fears the doctor is keeping captive somewhere in the clinic, torturing her to usurp her power. To save her and his comrades, Zack is forced to unleash his gift, triggering a bloody battle of the minds against Slovak and his telekinetic assassins. (Accent Film Entertainment)

Es ist ziemlich amüsant zu beobachten, wie der Film am Morgen ausgestrahlt wurde und schon nach dem Mittagessen gibt es mehrere Kommentare, nur um die anderen zu übertreffen, geschweige denn auf einen passenderen Abend zu warten. Aber jetzt zum Thema. Mir persönlich tut es leid, dass der Film in einigen Fällen unnötig auf die Knochen geht. Das betrifft zum Beispiel Szenen, in denen die Charaktere sich gegenseitig durch Telekinese zerreißen, und vor allem die Überbetonung von Dr. Slovak wurde immer unerträglicher, je mehr Zeit verging. Andererseits sind die Action-Passagen wunderbar intensiv und ziemlich brutal, man erinnert sich sofort an Wans ausgezeichneten Film Death Sentence. Die Atmosphäre wird auf jeden Fall nicht vermisst, aber das größte Highlight wird die ehrliche Maskenbildner-Arbeit und eine Menge saftiges Gore sein. Diese Hommage an Cronenbergs Scanners ist einfach ziemlich gelungen, und wenn das Erlebnis noch eine Weile nachwirkt, wahrscheinlich werde ich noch erhöhen.

A slightly upgraded Almost Human, but with telekinesis. One the one hand, a pretty nice 80s – 90s retro, on the other, it looks unintentionally funny in many scenes. The last third it hits the right notes pretty well, but I was expecting more. Not more blood, but more… execution confidence? It is so borderline, but at least it works.

The Mind's Eye has a pretty clear and well-know story, but I like it in its simplicity and directness. I liked the characters and was able to go on their journey with them to the end, and none of them bothered me. This is basically a slightly above-average B-movie that has something of Cronenberg and something of King and his para-horrors, which overall suited me just fine. I really didn't mind the lower budget.
