Irland in den 80er Jahren: Jimmy ist 21 und lebt mit vier Geschwistern und seinen Eltern in einem Arbeiterviertel in Dublin. Er will "den Soul nach Dublin holen". Jimmy gründet eine Band. Den Anfang machen zwei Kumpels sowie der 17-jährige pöbelnde Bus-Schaffner Deco Cuffe (Andrew Strong), der nicht gerade ein Sympathieträger ist, dafür eine tolle Stimme hat. Mit einer Anzeige in der Lokalzeitung findet Jimmy nach und nach den Rest der Band, ein bunter Haufen aus den Straßen Dublins. Doch ungeachtet der Arbeitslosigkeit, der schäbigen Straßenzüge und der fehlenden Hoffnung auf eine Besserung der wirtschaftlichen Situation schafft es die Formation, für die sich der ältere Trompeter Joey den Bandnamen „Die Commitments“ ausgedacht hat, sich zusammenzuraufen. Sie touren durch die Kneipen und Clubs Dublins und haben von Mal zu Mal mehr Erfolg. Nicht nur das Publikum, auch die Presse scheint begeistert. Doch mit steigender Popularität wachsen auch die Feindseligkeiten und Rivalitäten innerhalb der Band. Als sich bei einem Auftritt der bekannte Musiker Wilson Pickett für einen Gastauftritt angesagt hat, dann aber doch nicht erscheint, eskaliert die Situation und „die härteste Arbeiterband der Welt“ droht endgültig auseinanderzubrechen.
