The first independent Czech movie following the nationalization of the Czech film industry in 1945. This Bonton production of the Josef Škvorecký's novel of the same name emphasizes its commercially powerful motifs. This film is significantly worse than The Black Barons with cruder humor and less likable characters, although Olmer did not forget his filmmaking craft in this case. It functions as a series of more or less amusing military life episodes rather than a film with a strong storyline. I give it three stars. Overall impression: 50%.

Dieser fast schon kultige Film hat bei mir leider keinen Eindruck hinterlassen. Ich finde die ganze Verarbeitung ein bisschen oberflächlich und unfertig. Die lustigen Sprüche waren nicht lustig, sie waren einfach nur gemein. Der Protagonist ist sympathisch und gut dargestellt, aber wir bekommen keine große Entwicklung von ihm mit. Die einzige interessante Figur ist Miroslav Donutil, der eine absolut großartige Leistung abliefert, und er war auch das einzige, was mir an dem Film gefallen hat.
