Verfilmung der Lebensgeschichte des Malers Vincent van Gogh: Vincent wurde als Sohn eines Priesters geboren, und wollte in seine Fußstapfen treten. Er scheint für diese Aufgabe jedoch nicht sonderlich geeignet zu sein, aber irgendwann findet er sein wahres Talent: die Malerei. Er zieht nach Südfrankreich, wo er die Motive zu finden hofft, die er vor seinem inneren Auge sieht, und auf Leinwand bannen will. Doch seine ersten Jahre verlaufen nicht gerade erfolgreich, er lebt weniger von den Einnahmen durch den Verkauf seiner Bilder, die sein Bruder für ihn verkauft, sondern vielmehr durch Almosen von diesem Bruder und anderen Freunden und Bekannten. Alles ändert sich, als er mit einem anderen Maler – Paul Gaugin – in ein gemeinsames Haus zieht. (Verleiher-Text)

Ein schöner Film, der alles ausdrückt, was ich über van Gogh je gedacht habe. Es geht um das tragische Schicksal eines Menschen, der sich an alles Schöne geklammert hat, um wenigstens für einen Augenblick nicht die anderen Dinge sehen zu müssen und um die eigenen Sorgen vergessen zu können. Kirk Douglas ist ausgezeichnet und die Arbeit der Kamera und Regie, d. h. die Filmbilder, sind herrlich kräftig und warm – so, wie sie sein sollten.

An engaging biographical portrait of one of the most famous painters in modern history that avoids controversy, but dissects the personality of the main character and his fateful relationships very thoroughly and convincingly. Douglas and Quinn are perfect and the scenes that bring to life Van Gogh’s iconic paintings are beautiful. The epic orchestral score, on the other hand, is not very fitting and I would have liked a more tragic feeling by the end, instead of the universally melodramatic one. 80%

Kirk Douglas's performance is as passionate and expressive as Vincent Van Gogh's paintings are passionate and expressive. The film does make a lot up as part of its Hollywood license, but Kirk gets you through it. Also a plus for the cinemascope format, which was not standard in the 50s. I avoid dubbed films and prefer the original version, but here I have no choice but to say that Karel Höger was excellent. Not very valid, the old dubbing in K.M.Walo's time was really good.

This is what a good biopic should be. It seems to me that in times long past, American filmmakers were able to tackle the genre far better than they can today. Kirk Douglas as the psychologically torn painter Vincent van Gogh was almost demonic in certain scenes and certainly gave one of the best performances of his career. (80%)
