THE BIRTH OF A NATION – AUFSTAND ZUR FREIHEIT erzählt die wahre Geschichte von Nat Turner (Nate Parker), einem gebildeten Sklaven und Prediger, angesiedelt im Süden der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika 30 Jahre vor Ausbruch des amerikanischen Bürgerkriegs. Sein vom Bankrott bedrohter Besitzer Samuel Turner (Armie Hammer) nimmt das Angebot an, Nats Fähigkeiten als Prediger einzusetzen, um beruhigend auf rebellische Sklaven einzuwirken. Als Nat im Zuge seiner Tätigkeit Zeuge unzähliger Grausamkeiten wird – gegen ihn selbst, seine Frau Cherry (Aja Naomi King) und befreundete Sklaven, zettelt er einen Aufstand an in der Hoffnung, sein Volk in die Freiheit zu führen.
