Im Zuge des Kalten Krieges kämpfen die UdSSR und die USA im Jahr 1965 erbittert um die Führung im kosmischen Rennen. Die Sowjetunion steht kurz vor dem historischen Versuch, den ersten Menschen auf einen Weltraumspaziergang zu schicken. Zwei Wochen vor dem geplanten Start explodiert jedoch das Prüfungsraumschiff. Da die Zeit drängt, wird die Ursache nicht ermittelt und das enorme Risiko bei der Fortführung der Mission in Kauf genommen. Der erfahrene Militärflieger Pavel Beljajev und sein jüngerer Partner Aleksej Leonov sind bereit, trotz aller Gefahren den Schritt ins Unbekannte zu wagen... (Capelight Pictures)

The Russians can’t help it but show some typical Russian traits in this film. Still, it is a great movie. If you can survive the first 40 political minutes, you will get to see a visual heaven that brought me into a blissful oblivion. It is fascinating that it is the Russians who are capable of taking their time and creating visuals that are as great as those made by for example the Americans. And if you manage to suffer through the socialistic 40 minutes, you will get a nice film experience.

To make it more suspenseful, the film could have easily been at least half an hour shorter - some passages are really long. There is probably nothing much to fault in terms of visuals and sound, but all the pathos and patriotic crap might make those with weaker stomachs close to throwing up. To make matters worse, the comrades even applauded themselves for a job well done, in typical American imperialist style. I openly admit that I am pretty allergic to such scenes. (55%)
