1947 durchbricht auf einem Luftwaffenstützpunkt in Kalifornien der Pilot Chuck Yeager als erster Mensch die Schallmauer. Sechs Jahre später ist die Edwards Air Force Base der beste Trainingsplatz für Piloten. Diese setzen ihr Leben aufs Spiel, um alte Geschwindigkeits- und Höhenrekorde zu brechen, zur großen Sorge ihrer Familien. Als 1957 die Russen den Satelliten Sputnik ins All senden, steigt der Druck auf die USA. Daraufhin gründet die NASA das Mercury-Programm und rekrutiert dafür sieben Piloten. Chuck Yeager befindet sich nicht unter ihnen, er weigert sich, eine Versuchsperson zu sein; außerdem besitzt er nicht das notwendige Diplom. Die ersten Versuche, eine Rakete zu starten, scheitern kläglich. Es wird deutlich, wie schwierig und gefährlich die Mission sein wird. Als John Glenn als erster Amerikaner ein Flug um die Erde gelingt, wird er als Held gefeiert. Die sieben Astronauten werden im ganzen Land berühmt. Doch beim nächsten Versuch, bei dem der Pilot Gus Grissom an der Reihe ist, eine Reise ins All zu begehen, geht etwas schief. (arte)

Maybe this didn’t have to be so romantic and airy, but then it would have lost that special aura that makes the length of the movie more than bearable. In any case, I couldn’t shake off the feeling that these are two separate movies (one about Yaeger and the other about seven space pioneers - and both excellent!) that don’t really fit together, forcibly combined.

A little-known, yet absolutely essential film about the USAF experimental pilots and the struggle to conquer space in the 1960s. 200 minutes of heroic dudes, odes to the USA, some healthy humour and self-parody in places, and dramatic scenes brilliantly shot for their time, with an emphasis on realism and historical accuracy. Until Apollo 13, probably the best space conquest film with a legendary ensemble cast that you can only get in the Avengers movies these days.

I was really afraid of how long the movie is, but it is simply so well made that it captivated me and I just stared in awe of how good it is and how much I enjoyed it. There are great scenes for relaxation, but there are also absolutely stunning aerial scenes. It doesn't need any intense progression in terms of action, it is simply good in how skillfully it is filmed and shot. Fantastic in terms of special effects.
