The Crown

I enjoyed the first season as it concerns my favorite subject. I have always been intrigued by the history of Great Britain, both ancient and modern. Unlike all the romantic-populist films about Lady Diana, this series offers both points of view and makes the reign seem like quite a schizoid affair. The best actor of this season was clearly John Lithgow, his Winston Churchill was brilliant. (25.01.2017)

The first episode brought very high-quality drama with solid acting performances. The biggest surprise for me was John Lithgow, I couldn't imagine him as Winston Churchill before watching this episode, and he plays his character absolutely brilliantly. (24.01.2017)

The second episode was great, the drama even better than in the previous one, but I took off one star for the overly idealized Africa, indigenous tribes spontaneously lining the roads as the procession with the new queen passes by, it seemed a bit too straightforward to me. (24.01.2017)

I was satisfied with the third episode, I don't envy the creators of the series for the necessity to stick to the appearances of the depicted individuals, as they are naturally well-known. Edward VIII, aka David, turned out exceptionally well - here you can see how much easier creators of shows like Vikings have it. (24.01.2017)

The fourth episode was dramatic with a horror atmosphere. In such fog, even Jack the Ripper would be missed. John Lithgow seems to me better from episode to episode, his Winston Churchill is absolutely perfect and in the series he strongly outshines (or obscures) the other characters for me. (24.01.2017)

The plot of the ninth episode is quite calm, but it has an excellent atmosphere and unexpected depth. I know that I have praised John Lithgow's performance as Winston Churchill several times, but I have to do it again, because in this episode, he showcased his best. The ninth episode of the series was completely stolen by him. (25.01.2017)

I have to admit that I was expecting a drop in quality compared to Season 1, but I was wrong. The creators did make some changes by focusing more on interpersonal relationships this time around but it was done in a way that deserves nothing but praise. Which is not to say that I'm not interested in British politics. I'm very pleased so far and I'm looking forward to Season 3. (28.03.2018)

The first episode of the second season adequately continued the first season, the creators managed to successfully combine the politics of the Cold War period with the relationships in a somewhat unconventional family. Just like in the previous series, this episode also managed to maintain the atmosphere of the era and I enjoyed it. (25.03.2018)

The second episode was better than the first, even though it mainly focused on the relationship of the royal couple, while the main political events were rather pushed to the background. On the other hand, it is possible that this part was better precisely because the creators chose a very good way to capture the relationship complications. (25.03.2018)

The plot of the first and third episodes fit together nicely, I notice that the political events have moved more to the sidelines and much more space is devoted to relationships in the second season. Maybe this is good because it's clear that the royal family has two major tasks - politics and reducing inappropriate behavior of its members. (25.03.2018)

The episode dedicated to Princess Margaret unexpectedly entertained me. It nicely showed that even a golden cage is still just a cage, and how depressing it must be when a person absolutely cannot make decisions about themselves because their bad decisions could have tremendous consequences. The fifth episode was slightly weaker compared to the previous one, but I was still very satisfied. There was a new twist, last time it was more about a person, this time it was about an institution. I really enjoy the amazing system of secretaries and undersecretaries, it always reminds me of the series "Yes, Minister!". (26.03.2018)

Considering that the Munich 1938 does not seem to particularly concern the British, the most painful chapter of their history is their former monarchy's relationship with the leaders of the Nazi regime. This time again, it was rather a politically focused episode, although the influence of Edward/David's previous decisions on his family was clearly evident. (26.03.2018)

Again an episode that focused primarily on Princess Margaret and her relationship with Anthony Armstrong-Jones. Compared to the similarly themed fifth episode, the plot was slightly weaker this time, but that's not to say it was bad. It just didn't have the same impact, even though the portrayal was flawless. I really enjoyed the eighth episode, there was a return to foreign policy, the big players this time were dividing Africa, and the creators impressed me twice. Firstly, they cast Dexter in the role of JFK, which completely threw me off for a moment, and secondly, I appreciated that they avoided using the notoriously known shots from the assassination. The ninth episode had a very depressing impact on me, and I liked that. The episode had a wonderfully gloomy atmosphere, I enjoyed the comparison of conditions at Gordonstone School from the perspective of two generations, the development of relationships within the royal family was interesting, and I was glad to learn some details about Philip's background. The final episode was not bad, but I missed the atmosphere that the previous installment brought. The creators once again skillfully merged the political and relationship storylines, and I had to search on the internet for details of historical events, which is good. It is a clear proof to me that it is meaningful to produce similar TV series. (28.03.2018)

I didn't follow any updates about the series, so the first moments of the third season completely threw me off. The massive changes in the cast forced me to get used to the already known characters all over again. Anyway, the recasting was clearly a good move, the writers also did an excellent job, so even the third season was a satisfaction on my part. (30.01.2020)

The first episode of the third season was unexpectedly challenging for me because I had to familiarize myself with all the characters all over again out of nowhere. The complete change in the cast of the main characters really surprised me, although I acknowledge that it was a reasonable step, artificial aging of the actors would have looked unbelievable. The second episode again dealt with the relationship of both sisters (which is only good) and it occurred to me that so far both episodes have mainly focused on politics, while personal relationships remain more on the sidelines. Margaret's dinner at the White House was great and Kurgan in the role of Lyndon Johnson was an excellent choice. (29.01.2020)
