Jason, der rechtmäßige Thronerbe Griechenlands, ist auf der Suche nach dem sagenumwobenen goldenen Vlies. Doch bei seiner Reise ans andere Ende der Welt wird er zum Spielball der Götter. Zwanzig Jahre nachdem Pelios König Aristo ermordet hat, kehrt Jason nach Hause zurück. Der rechtmäßige Thronerbe Griechenlands will den Tod seines Vaters rächen und selbst den Thron besteigen. Doch um Pelios zu besiegen und dem Land Frieden zu bringen, benötigt Jason das sagenumwobene goldene Vlies. Zusammen mit den besten Männern Griechenlands macht er sich auf die abenteuerliche Reise ans andere Ende der Welt. Doch Göttervater Zeus und seine Gattin Hera haben ihre ganz eigenen Pläne mit dem Abenteurer. (RTL Nitro)

Dreieinhalb Sterne, die ich auf vier aufrunde. Drei Sterne gehören Ray Harryhausen – seine Tricks sind eigentlich der einzige Grund, warum ich mir Jason und die Argonauten angeschaut habe. Die Geschichte ist eine klassische Sage, die wahrscheinlich jeder kennt. Sie wurde leicht abgeändert und von nicht besonders gut spielenden Schauspieler*innen dargestellt. Na ja. Wie gesagt – Harryhausen, Harryhausen und noch einmal Harryhausen. Sein Abschlusskampf mit den Skeletten ist legendär. Dasselbe trifft auch auf die Gefangennahme der Harpyien oder den lebendigen Bronzetitanen Talos zu. Einen halben Stern bekommt die Musik von Bernard Herrmann. Die meiste Zeit hört man nichts Außergewöhnliches. Das Motiv, das er bei der Entstehung der Skelette benutzt hat, ist aber exzellent – einfach und beeindruckend. Kampf der Titanen bleibt unübertroffen (und wird es auch weiterhin bleiben).

"Jason and the Argonauts" ultimately has a quite barren script. It's a simple story about the desire to achieve something and go after it, despite all obstacles. It's also a story about love, which is nice, but the ending of the classic myth is completely different. "Jason and the Argonauts" ends with a classic happy ending, which completely destroys the myth and its meaning. But I can't help it. For the scenes that Ray Harryhausen worked on, I simply have to give a higher rating. It's absolutely unbelievable and contemporary effects can't compete with it. I think I have many films and fairytales connected to my childhood. But it’s probably the most apparent with this Greek epopee, which always charmed me with the beautiful tricks which surpass even the modern digital effects.

A spectacular ancient fable about the journey of Jason and his companions in search of the Golden Fleece, slightly elevated above the average by the work of visual effects legend Ray Harryhausen (The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, Clash of the Titans, etc.). Some of the effects are impressive, some pleasantly naive, but Harryhausen's trademark is his animated figures: the statue of Hephaestus, the attacking harpies, the dragon guardian of the fleece and the armed skeletons make this film a digestible spectacle and partly erase the handicap of the fact that Don Chaffey is not a very capable director. Overall, three and a half *.
