Auf einem amerikanischen Militärgelände werden neue Kampfroboter getestet. Als plötzlich ein Gewitter aufzieht, wird einer der Roboter vom Blitz getroffen. 'Nr.5' ist von nun an kein Militärroboter mehr, sondern gerät völlig außer Kontrolle und verschwindet vom Gelände. Er findet Unterschlupf bei Stephanie (Ally Sheedy), einer jungen Tierliebhaberin, und macht große Veränderungen durch: auf einmal empfindet er Neugierde und Angst, kann über Witze lachen und hat gar keine Lust, sich auf Befehl selbst auszuschalten. Schließlich verliebt Nr. 5 sich auch noch in die hübsche Stephanie und löst dadurch einen ganz schönen Wirbel aus Diese hat aber inzwischen das Militär und deren Wissenschaftler über seinen Verbleib informiert. Nr. 5 schwebt in größter Gefahr, denn seine 'Erzeuger' haben nur die Zerstörung des außer Kontrolle geratenen Roboters im Sinn... (Columbia TriStar Film)
