It's as if the makers of Beacon Point didn't quite know how to make the plot interesting enough, so they decided it would be nice to shove in something mysterious and ancient that doesn't really fit in there at all. Why not? It's not going to be a big spectacle, but at least the mystery element finds its way in there. And that's about it. The importance of the characters to the plot and their fates is almost zero.
