Der arme, erfolglose Musiker Claude meint, im tatsächlichen Leben nicht viel zu lachen zu haben. Alles nervt ihn nur noch. Also zieht er das Land der Träume vor. Im Schlaf wandert er in vergangene Zeiten zurück, um Heldentaten zu vollbringen und Ruhm, Reichtum und Frauenherzen zu gewinnen. Als aber eines Nachts der Traum nicht mehr rosig, sondern im Gegenteil zum Horrortrip wird, setzt er alles daran, den Schlaf zu meiden. Da trifft er seine schöne Nachbarin Suzanne, die einer Herzensdame aus seinem Traum aufs Haar gleicht. Und plötzlich winken die Liebe und der berufliche Erfolg auch im richtigen Leben ... Every now and then, an older movie surprises me, even though it’s not necessarily a rule. But I didn’t know that Beauties of the Night will be more of a musical with easily forgettable songs than a proper high-quality movie. Plus, it’s really obvious that the creators were making a theatre comedy more than a real movie comedy. Because those wannabe funny scenes are so purpose-built it’s sad.

In the 1950s, this film had all the prerequisites to be a significant commercial success. The comedy genre, beautiful women, and the star Gérard Philipe. However, it is not the beginning of the 1950s anymore, and what was sufficient back then no longer holds up today. Especially the operetta inserts now appear outdated. A similar "surreal" form was used two decades later in The Man from Acapulco, which still leaves a fresh modern impression. Beauties of the Night may not offend, but the film no longer has anything to captivate us with. Overall impression: 55%.
