Aidan Bloom (ZACH BRAFF) muss sich eingestehen, dass er vom amerikanischen Traum bestenfalls träumen kann: Als weißer Schauspieler in L.A. bewirbt er sich mittlerweile sogar um Rollen für afroamerikanische Figuren. Daher muss seine Frau Sarah (KATE HUDSON) das Geld verdienen, die neben ihrem Full-Time-Job auch noch den Haushalt sowie das Familienleben meistert. Sein Bruder (JOSH GAD) ist auch keine große Hilfe – er ist zwar ein Genie, hat sich aber in seinen Wohnwagen verkrochen und surft als Kobold durchs Netz. Und als Aidans Vater (MANDY PATINKIN) ihm zu all seinem „Glück" auch noch unterbreitet, dass er nicht länger für die Privatschule seiner beiden Enkel aufkommen kann, sieht Aidan nur einen Ausweg: er beschließt spontan, die Kinder selbst zu unterrichten. Das Ergebnis ist ein familiäres Chaos – zunächst. Als Aidan aber aufgrund eigener Wissenslücken nicht ganz freiwillig damit beginnt, immer weiter vom Lehrplan abzuweichen, beginnt selbst er noch etwas zu lernen - über das Leben und seinen Platz in der Welt... This films portrays the life of one Jewish family who has lived through some hardships but is quite likable. Too likable, perhaps. It was shot in such a way that it was impossible not to grow fond of this family. Add in some geek jokes, Sheldon Cooper and one dunderhead who doesn’t know what to do with his life, because in his heart he is still a little kid with a head full of ogres, videogames and dark mages. Oh, and he’s a genius, by the way. Wish I Was Here is an independent American movie with everything that entails, which tells its story in such a way you just can’t dislike it.

Yeah, I quite liked this. It's funny just enough, it doesn't pretend too much, and there are interesting characters, including Kate Hudson, whom I usually don't really like. Zach Braff shows that he is a good creator and a good director, and luckily he doesn't get too carried away with sentimentality, but just shows that life is sometimes great and sometimes just crazy difficult.
