Her death wreaks havoc on the quiet life of Sergeant André Surprenant of the local Sûreté du Québec detachment. Sergeant André Surprenant, a police officer and father of a rebellious teenage daughter trying to live an ordinary life after a marital breakup. His work is run-of-the-mill, rural law enforcement in the Magdalen Islands region, a cluster of islands off the coast of Quebec, an ironic choice as he's afraid of water and can't even make it to a swimming lesson to try to overcome his phobia. His world changes when Rosalie Richard, a young woman of 18 years and local mayor's daughter is found murdered and raped at the foot of a cliff by the sea. Inspector Gingras arrives from Montreal to try to solve the murder. Seeing that the police of the metropolis focuses on ambiguous facts and seems to seek a suspect predetermined, Surprenant decides to conduct his own investigation with his partner, Genevieve Savoie, who is secretly in love with him.
