Enrico Oliveri, Chef der wichtigsten italienischen Oppositionspartei, steckt in der Krise. Zermürbt von miesen Umfragewerten und politischen Intrigen setzt er sich eines Nachts heimlich ab nach Paris, zu seiner ehemaligen Geliebten Danielle. Große Aufregung im Führungszirkel der Partei: keiner weiß, wo Oliveri geblieben ist. Da hat dessen engster Mitarbeiter Andrea Bottini eine geniale Idee: er ruft Enricos Zwillingsbruder Giovanni zu Hilfe, einen exzentrischen Philosophen, der die Stelle des Verschollenen übernehmen soll. Mit überraschenden Folgen. Giovanni findet Spaß an der Sache und mischt die italienische Politik gehörig auf. Und nicht nur das: selbst die deutsche Kanzlerin kann sich seinem skurrilen Charme nicht entziehen...
Eine brillante und umwerfend komische Satire, in der besonders Toni Servillo (Il Divo, La Grande Bellezza) in einer Doppelrolle glänzt. Nominiert für zwölf italienische Filmpreise, darunter Bester Film, Bestes Drehbuch und Bester Hauptdarsteller.

During the time I’ve been writing my reviews on this site I have seen a number of Italian movies. Comedies, dramas, mafia shoot-offs, but also classic deep stories from the Apennine Peninsula. The Italians have a lot to offer, but I have a feeling that they somehow don’t want to open up to Europe and rather make their films for themselves. But it’s just my feeling, as Long Live Freedom is a movie with a good premise, but the storyline often seems incredibly ordinary. Sure, Toni Servillo is a good actor and his dual role in this movie is flawless. However, I still think that he could have squeezed more out of it. That goes for the whole movie, as well as a number of other Italian movies.

Toni Servillo is such an interesting actor that you'll enjoy Long Live Freedom, even though much more could have been made from the subject matter and the overall concept of political criticism through a double. Nevertheless, it's a pretty clever comedy about how politics is actually dirty, but you can really do wonders with it.
