In his original documentary, Francesco Patierno follows the rivalry of two competing film productions that employ the famous actresses, Anna Magnani and Ingrid Bergman. Simultaneously, the two of them fall into a love triangle with the famous neo-realist director, Roberto Rossellini, who directs one of the films during this scandal. The documentary cleverly combines well-known film scenes of these renowned actresses with archive material, which is completed with anonymous commentary. It thus both reveals and helps to create the scandalous show of the international love affair of the 1950s. (Febiofest)

Einer der schwächsten Dokumentarfilme von hinter den Kulissen, die je gedreht wurden. Der Wechsel von Partnern (auch in Ehen mit anderen Menschen) ist leider ein normaler Bestandteil der Entwicklung zwischenmenschlicher Beziehungen und nichts Ungewöhnliches. Hier soll die Verbindung zwischen der betrogenen Ehefrau Magnani (Volcano) und der neuen Partnerin Bergman (Stromboli) zu finden sein. Und das war's, nichts, worüber es sich zu reden lohnt. Man erfährt nichts Besonderes über die Filme, die Schauspielerinnen oder Rossellini. Selbst ein einfacher Wiki-Eintrag vermittelt mehr als dieser Pseudodokumentarfilm.

The giants of this era Ingrid Bergman and Anna Magnani have not left their mark on me yet, even though I’ve been familiar with them. So now I was curious about what this documentary would come up with. And it didn’t come up with anything at all. A random assortment of footages and movie clips is complemented by a dull narrative, which most certainly doesn’t provide me with any reason to start being interested in these actresses.

Rather than calling it a documentary, it's more appropriate to talk about it as a collage, where this film is composed of shots titled "volcano" which tell the stories of film personalities, such as Ingrid Bergman, Anna Magnani, or Roberto Rossellini. As a collage, it definitely works much better than as a documentary film. It really doesn't say much.
