Carla ist nicht besonders hübsch, ziemlich verklemmt und dazu noch fast taub. Als Sekretärin bei einer Immobilienfirma opfert sie sich für ihren Job auf, ohne Anerkennung dafür zu erhalten. Nach einem Schwächeanfall Carlas wird ein Praktikant eingestellt. Er ist frisch aus dem Gefängnis entlassen. Carla arbeitet als Sekretärin bei einer Immobilienfirma. Sie ist die typische graue Maus, der in der Hölle des Büroalltags von den Kollegen ständig auf die Füße getreten wird. Als sie einen Schwächeanfall erleidet, wird ein Praktikant eingestellt, um ihr bei der Arbeit zur Hand zu gehen. Von Beginn an fühlt Carla sich zu Paul, dem Kleinkriminellen, der gerade aus dem Gefängnis entlassen wurde, hingezogen. In ihm findet sie einen mitfühlenden Kollegen, der ihr hilft, sich an ihrem Vorgesetzten zu rächen. Als Paul kurz darauf ohne Wissen seines Bewährungshelfers kündigt, um als Barkeeper seine Schulden bei einem ehemaligen Komplizen abzuarbeiten, braucht er schon bald Carlas Hilfe. Diese kann aufgrund ihrer Taubheit nämlich von den Lippen anderer Menschen lesen. Dank dieses Talents verbringt sie ihre Nächte von da an auf einem Dach, von dem aus sie, mit einem Fernglas ausgerüstet, die Unterhaltungen des Nachtklub-Besitzers mit zwei Ganoven zu entziffern versucht. Tatsächlich entschlüsselt sie Ort und Zeit der Geldübergabe. Paul nutzt dieses Wissen, um in die Wohnung einzudringen und nach der Beute zu suchen. Als er dabei überrascht und festgehalten wird, macht sich Carlas Talent noch einmal bezahlt, um Paul zu retten. (arte)

Vincent Cassel and Emmanuelle Devos show off their excellent acting skills in this movie. Vincent portrays a petty thief and he’s trying to smooth out his character in a way I hadn’t seen in his previous movies. What can you do? It’s still not enough and I still felt afraid of his character. The way his eyes can act! Emmanuelle Devos, for a change, plays an unhappy person, who is trying to find some good in this world. Other people laugh at her at work, and to be honest, I don’t get it because it would take a lot of work to find a more beautiful French actress. Well and these two eventually meet each other and if they didn’t exploit each other so much, I would even give this movie a five-star review.

The chemistry works, the atmosphere is absorbing, the actors outdo each other, but it's still not enough. The middle passage is terribly drawn out.

An interesting and originally conceived crime story, which is also a quality psychological drama and an unconventional and, above all, cliché-free romance. Both protagonists are outsiders in their own way, and their journey toward mutual closeness is definitely not easy. Moreover, their mutual actions are dictated by the desire to use (and abuse) each other to create a truly deep emotion in the end. It doesn't make sense to compare this to usual genre films, as it's definitely not hard-hitting and flashy, but the decisive attention is focused on building their relationship, and careful exploration, and the tension arises more from the viewer's anticipation of what both characters will do in response to each other's actions. It's not a perfect film, but in its genre, I consider it to be highly above average. Both Vincent Cassel and Emmanuelle Devos are top-notch character actors and their chemistry is excellent. Overall impression: 85%.
