AS COOL AS I AM is a coming of age story about a smart, young girl caught in small town America. 16-year-old Lucy bears witness to her mother and father's disintegrating marriage while confiding her hopes and fears in her best friend Kenny. Sixteen-year-old Lucy is a tomboy. She gets on well with her father but is frequently separated from him for months when he goes to work in Canada. Her relationship with her mother is easy-going and she takes care of most things around the house. She tunes into her sexuality and her not so 'stable' family dynamics. She develops a relationship with her best friend Kenny and starts to realize that her parents' marriage is not as solid as she had previously imagined. She notices that her father's extended stays away from the family are not typical, and that her mother does not pine for her father as much as she herself does. (HBO Europe)

The film As Cool as I Am offers a very simplistic view of the joys and sorrows of growing up. Many times the viewer doesn't understand if the mother and daughter have accidentally switched roles. Perhaps that's because the age difference between them isn't even visually apparent. Only the music didn't outright annoy me, although even in that regard, it was no miracle. (35%)

One American girl doesn’t know what to do with her life, so she tries, risks and hazards with her life like almost every other American girl – with sex. The movie wasn’t special in any way, but it was a nice way to pass time.
