Nach 16 Jahren kehrt Marit Gustavsson, erfolgreiche Londoner Modedesignerin, erstmals in ihr norwegisches Heimatdorf Solvorn zurück - weniger zur Begeisterung ihrer älteren Schwester Kristin, die hier mit ihrem Mann Petter den elterlichen Betrieb übernommen hat. Kristin plagt vor allem eine Sorge: Sie hat ihrer Tochter Ida bis heute verschwiegen, dass Marit deren leibliche Mutter ist. Kurz nach Idas Geburt musste Marit das Kind auf Druck der Eltern in Kristins Obhut übergeben.
