In a picturesque city on the shores of Michigan, a series of mysterious murders has an unlikely but common thread - Bryan Spikes, a hired insurance fraud investigator who gets more than a paycheck when he is inexplicably killed and then framed for the crimes. One year later, Alex Forrester (Mark Bierlein, Street Boss) arrives in the city claiming to be a writer researching the case. But as he begins uncovering the shocking truth behind the murders, his informants turn up dead, and he soon learns he may be next. It seems there is no-one he can trust; including Bryan's ex-girlfriend Heather (Mena Suvari, American Beauty) and a new overly-friendly ex-sharpshooter neighbor (Tom Arnold, True Lies). The deeper he digs, the more his life, and Heather s, is in danger. What is the secret in this city that everyone is hiding? What is Alex's link to Bryan? He must now set the record straight, not only for restitution, but for revenge. (Verleiher-Text)

Englisch "Restitution" is precisely one of those films where you know from the beginning that it's probably pretending to be something it's not. It is true that the only reason I was interested in this piece is Mena Suvari. I've had a weakness for this little blonde since American Beauty - who wouldn't after Kevin Spacey? However, Mena Suvari doesn't have as much screen time as I would like, plus her character's name is Heather, so one feels like she came straight from "American Pie". She plays a bartender who gets involved with a guy who seems to be investigating something, following someone. Things don't end up the way he wanted. "Restitution" is a film that pretends to be a clever thriller with a twist, but in reality, it's just an action film lacking any element of surprise. The several-minute-long introduction, interrupted by a significant twist, hints that it must have some meaning. The meaning is not difficult to reveal fairly early on. It's a shame because apart from the final twist and the truth unfolding, the film has nothing else to offer. It's not gritty, there are no dialogue that will captivate you, it's just plain shooting and killing, mostly for the sole purpose of revenge. The main hero and his unintended sidekick are not characters that the audience can sympathize with, there's no other interesting aspect, so the film is simply about whether you want or don't want a transparent spectacle without real twists, surprises, or seasoning, just a boring ride with characters that you couldn't care less about.
