Kurz bevor er in seinen wohlverdienten Ruhestand geschickt wird, muss der Hauptmann Nathan Brittles (John Wayne) seinen letzten Auftrag erfüllen. Er soll zwei Frauen aus dem Fort vor den Indianern in Sicherheit bringen. Doch an der Poststation, wo er die beiden absetzen will, findet er nur noch Trümmer und Leichen vor. Als der 'Teufelshauptmann' sich für dieses Blutbad rächen will, wird ihm gemeldet, dass bereits tausend indianische Krieger schwer bewaffnet den Fluss entlang reiten. It is interesting that John Wayne is once again playing a character who is older than his actual age. He mastered the role of Captain Nathan Brittles, who is preparing for retirement, but the actor was only forty-two at the time. However, he played a role that suited him the most. He is a just man, strict and unafraid to raise his voice to his subordinates, but he will never do something he should be ashamed of for the rest of his life or something that would require him to make amends. He always strives to be an honest man and despises those who hide behind something and are not honorable. This is Duke, as fans love him even after many years.
