Long Island, Anfang der 1920er-Jahre. Auf der Insel nordöstlich von New York genießt man die „Roaring Twenties“ in vollen Zügen, vor allem der geheimnisumwobene Multimillionär Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) veranstaltet eine luxuriöse Party nach der anderen. Sein neuer Nachbar, der Börsenmakler Nick (Tobey Maguire), fühlt sich von dem ausschweifenden Lebensstil sofort angezogen. Schon bald macht er die Bekanntschaft von Gatsby. Der Playboy möchte, dass Nick ihm dabei hilft, die Liebe seiner Ex-Freundin Daisy (Carey Mulligan) wiederzugewinnen. Aber Daisy ist mittlerweile Mutter und mit dem schwerreichen Tom verheiratet. Dennoch beginnen Gatsby und Daisy erneut eine Beziehung. Für Gatsby ist die Affäre allerdings nicht genug. Er verlangt von Daisy, sich von ihrem Gatten zu trennen. Nick findet das herrschsüchtige Verhalten Gatsbys zunehmend abstoßend. Als sich Nick, Gatsby, Tom und Daisy zu einem gemeinsamen Treffen verabreden, kommt es zur Tragödie. (ServusTV)
