The dark horror thriller In Their Sleep unfolds with Sarah (Anne Parillaud, Nikita, Innocent Blood) coming to terms with the death of her teenage son. While out late one night on a lonely road Sarah almost hits a young man who staggers into her path. Bloodied and terrified Arthur, the young man, recounts the earlier events of the evening and claims his injuries were sustained when he caught a burglar. Vowing to help him, Sarah unwittingly delves into a nightmare she may not escape. (Verleiher-Text)

Quality shows up where I wasn’t expecting it this year. In Their Sleep is a very good European horror thriller, which means that when it comes to the characters, there won’t be anyone very likeable and that their behaviour will be questionable at times, but when it comes to atmosphere and brutality (which here isn’t too extravagant, but, er… nicely sharp), there is nothing to complain about. Immediately after watching it my rating was around nine out of ten points, a day later I see it more like a comfortable eight. In a year as poor as this, this is one of the most interesting genre pieces.

Ein eisiger Thriller über einen jungen Schurken, der gerne in fremde Häuser einbricht und deren Besitzer im Schlaf brutal hinrichtet. Der Film wirkt wieder sehr trostlos und entfremdet auf den Zuschauer, wie es bei den Franzosen üblich ist. Obwohl wir Zeuge ziemlich anständiger Morde sind, weicht die Brutalität diesmal etwas zurück und konzentriert sich auf die psychologische Seite der beiden Hauptcharaktere. Eher als das bewährte Duo Anne Parillaud und dem mordenden Psychopathen mochte ich den Charakter des rachsüchtigen Vaters, der entschlossen den Täterm Schritt für Schritt folgte. Das brachte die richtige Actionspannung und eine unerwartete Überraschung mit sich. In Their Sleep zählt definitiv zu dem Besseren, das im vergangenen miserablen Jahr erschienen ist.
