Wolverine: Weg des Kriegers

Another comic book protagonist had to go through the inner darkness of his soul, tormented by the demons of missing memories of his own past. It starts off great. Wolverine against the devious yakuza doesn't take the traditional comic book route but rather weaves a complex mafia-political web that would put any CIA field agent-analyst to shame. And he also lacks the essential skills. The problem arises when the adamantium claws pierce the skin to slice up the evil minions by the dozens. Hugh Jackman can look all sorts of cool (and we can be assured that absolutely no one has ever fit any other comic book role better), but when you send him into serious action, it feels somehow out of place. This is somewhat because it’s an extra aspect compared to the rest of the film, just to meet the demands of it being a blockbuster. And the mental autopsy itself? Barking about how great B.S. was at it is boring, but Matthew Vaughn actually did it better. It's not a bad movie, it's just that routine comic book characters should be left to routine directors. A completely cut-and-dry flop – that’s how I’d describe this Wolverine. The authors might have forced it a little and gave us a solid atomic explosion right in the first scene, but it’s all downhill from there, which can’t even be stopped by the well-oiled machine called Svetlana Khodchenkova. In any case, it’s hard to say what exactly the problem is here. I think it’s the story itself. For a few years now, I’ve thought that X-Men lacked any sort of concept. The authors are popping out one movie after another and it’s a hard job to try to find a connection between them. For example, I think it’s pretty brainless to shoot two movies called Wolverine over the span of just 4 years. You can be a little forceful at the beginning, but you can’t blackmail us with artificial movies. On the other hand, Marvel never had a problem with recycling and so I’ve got a feeling that there’s a whole array of useless superheroes waiting for us in the future, all under the wings of talented directors. For example, it’s a shame that this movie was directed by Mangold, as I’d much rather see him do other movies. And when I see his upcoming movie – Untitled Wolverine Sequel – it makes me sick to my stomach. That’d be a third Wolverine movie over the span of ten years. However, the X-Men saga still remains to be the moneymaker of the decade, if not the century. I’m surprised it’s still doing well. (04.07.2014)

Nein, es tut schon weh, aber so funktionierts eben auch nicht. Hood hat aus Wolverine einen generischen Klischeekleiderbügel gemacht, Mangold bemüht sich, einen nicht modernen intelligenten Blockbuster daraus zu machen, der mit Kammerambiente, Emotionen, Realismus und Mythologie des Charakters arbeitet. Das Ergebnis ist furchtbar unausgewogen - ein dunkler und hineinsaugender Prolog, gefolgt vom mittleren Teil des Films, in dem Romantik und Logans inneres Sichselbstfinden dominieren. Dieser Teil ist langsam, hebt nicht existierende Bedeutungen empor und wiederholt dementsprechend nur das, was beispielsweise Singer auf einem unvergleichbar kleinerem Raum zu entfalten vermochte. Wie viele Wörter, wie viele Motive, wie viele verzauberte Zitate gab es da nur ... und was ist damit passiert? Hohler Bambus, Logan zum dritten Mal als romantischer Held. Über das Finale würde ich lieber schweigen, denn sofern ich mich denn bis dato damit beschwichtigt habe, dass Mangold am Ende die Trumpfkarte herausholt, lag ich falsch. Es ist, als ob sich jemand daran erinnern würde, dass das hier schließlich ein Comic-Blockbuster ist, und miserabel sämtliche Unlogik sowie Übertreibung bishin zu einem apathischen Höhepunkt gesteigert hätte, wodurch aus einer Art möchtegern erwachsenem Präludium eine zersplitterte Sonate wird. Da knartsch es aber gewaltig. Es knartsch wegen der Action. Es knartsch wegen des Humors. Es knartschen die Krallen. Jackman knartsch da zwar nicht, jedoch vermag er nicht, diese Diät-Sushi-Mischung ausreichend zu würzen, damit man schnell und ohne Schuldgefühle das ganze als Nutzlosigkeit vergessen kann. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Marvell-Streifen fehlt es mir hier an einem Konzept, beide Spin-offs sind klanglich vollends neben der Kappe und schaffen nichts Kohärentes. Infolgedessen verbringen wir im Kino zwei Stunden und während der Untertitel zu seufzen. "Hat denn diese laue Vorspeise sein müssen? Hauptgericht, bitte! " (25.07.2013)

Compared to a more recent origin story, Logan's purification has the exact opposite effect, but when it comes to a rating, I see it as virtually identical. This time, I understand the criticisms and objections, but I balanced on the edge of my seat for two hours in the cinema and devoured every minute. And yet, our wild Kuzuri doesn't have to just fly on the roof of a train or slice enemies. It's enough for him to wander around, frown, protect Mariko, and search for himself. Because that animal inside him audibly purrs, even when he's asleep. (11.08.2013)

A slow and very personal drama that loses it toward the end when it turns into the comic far too heavy-handedly. A shame that Aronofsky didn’t make it. Not that Mangold didn’t do a good job, but his signature isn’t as pronounced, tending too much toward the mainstream. But maybe the producers wanted just that. The shift to Japan, where Wolverine is a little out of his depth (but doesn’t try to adapt), is like manna for the viewer. Although we aren’t bombarded with the exotic (was it a problem to film the chase at night with the neons switched on?), but it adds to the scope of the X-Men universe. Jackman is awesome and after the thirteen years he’s been playing his role, it’s become second nature, and worked out for this movie and looks like a huge, invincible gorilla in the fight with Sanada. All the more I was disappointed with the very cursory encounter with the seven hundred ninja’s which I almost didn’t notice. The finale, if a little over the top, had its moments and overall I took utterly positive feelings away with me. Hype can be harmful. (28.07.2013)

Wolverine doesn't fit well in Japan, and it was beautifully evident throughout the whole 130 minutes. It started with a fantastic retreat in Nagasaki, continued with a solid romance in the style of The Last Samurai, and ended with dull action scenes and a "surprising" outcome reminiscent of B-movies from the 1990s demons. Logan is a likable character with a suitably dark past, but so far no one has been able to exploit it properly. Either it's an action flick or an attempt at a mysterious adult blockbuster that is awkward to the point of being unappealing, and appropriately disparate. (23.11.2013)

Wolverine: Weg des Kriegers ist leider kein gelungener Film. Er ist nicht ausgesprochen schlecht, aber er hat mir ein bisschen weniger als der vorherige Film X-Men Origins: Wolverine und viel weniger als die ersten zwei Teile der Saga gefallen. Dabei strengt sich Hugh Jackman unglaublich an, er mag Logan sehr und weiß, was die Fans sehen und hören wollen. Leider stellt ihm das fade Drehbuch ein Bein. Die Handlung hat sich vom ausgezeichneten Comic von Chris Claremont und Frank Miller inspiriert. Man hat aus ihm aber im Grunde genommen nur die Namen der Figuren, Japan und ein paar Situationen herausgepickt. Die starke und gleichzeitig einfache Geschichte hat man nicht genutzt. Stattdessen ist der Film manchmal überladen und manchmal zu einfach. Am besten wirkt wahrscheinlich die zarte Szene von Wolverine und Mariko, von den Actionszenen hat mir am besten die mit dem Schnellzug gefallen. Der Rest ist einfallslos. Wolverines Toben würde ich jetzt auch nicht als besonders cool bezeichnen (in dieser Hinsicht führt die Szene des Überfalls der Schule aus X-Men 2, wo Wolverine am wolverinemäßigsten ist). Außer dem Anfang in Nagasaki hat mir diesmal auch ein denkwürdiger Moment gefehlt. Davon gab es im vorherigen Film jede Menge. Und wohin ist der Spaß verschwunden? Wer weiß... Ein paar gute Sprüche (ungefähr drei) und mehr nicht. Seien Sie mir nicht böse, aber das Ende war lächerlich. Den eindeutig besten Moment des Films gab es mitten im Abspann. Ich habe eigentlich den Eindruck, dass Wolverine: Weg des Kriegers nur wegen dieser Szene und eines guten Soundtracks von Marco Beltrami gedreht/ nachlässig gemacht wurde. (25.07.2013)

I am glad that another Wolverine movie has made it to the cinemas and I think that the fans feel the same. The studio must be quite satisfied. With $55 million in the first weekend in the US alone, it is a pretty good result considering the $100 million budget. Depending on how much the film earns internationally, the basic budget will be recouped during the first week. That is good and it only pleases me that good movies based on comics still attract attention. I'm not saying it's great, but it's good. "Wolverine" is a good movie, sometimes a bit pathetic and other times too chambered, but as a whole, it is good. The fans, both comic book fans and X-Men movie fans, will leave satisfied. Hier sieht man Wolverine im ganz anderen Licht als das letzte Mal. Zunächst macht es den Anschein, als ob das psychologische Konzept eines Vielfraßes funktionieren könnte, aber der Schein trügt. Jackman machte nur für eine kleine Meditation einen Abstecher nach Japan, was ein bisschen schief geht, nur um alles wieder geradezubiegen. Allerdings erreicht diesmal die Action bestenfalls das Amateur-Niveau, und ihre Verflechtung mit einem langen Plot funktioniert nicht ohne einen hochwertigen Bösewicht. Als er sich endlich auf einen richtigen Kampf von Wolverine gegen den gesamten Ninja-Clan vorbereitet (also Neo gegen die Mobs von Agent Smith in Reloaded), knockt er zwei von denen aus um dann absurderweise auf Motorrädern in ihn hinein zu fahren. Wenn ich im vorherigen Teil für den hervorragenden Hugh Jackman Punkte gut geschrieben habe, werde ich es diesmal nach zwei Stunden langer weile nicht mehr wiederholen. (10.11.2013)

Wolverine played by Hugh Jackman is, as always, amazing. I have already said it in my reviews of previous X-Men movies and I say it again. He was born for this role. This movie definitely looked great on paper and the result is not bad either. I don’t have any major complaints concerning The Wolverine. Still, I can't help feeling (and, reading others’ reviews, I'm probably not the only one) that this installment of the X-Men saga was essentially pointless. (10.01.2014)
