Spring Break in New York. Während ihre reichen Eltern im Urlaub oder auf Geschäftsreise sind, wollen die gelangweilten Highschool-Kids der Upper East Side exzessiv feiern. Und White Mike (Chace Crawford) versorgt sie mit dem nötigen Stoff. Der 17-Jährige hat nach dem Tod seiner Mutter die High School geschmissen und dealt stattdessen mit Partydrogen. Er selbst rührt das Zeug nicht an, er trinkt noch nicht mal Alkohol. Alle hält er auf Distanz, selbst seine Jugendfreundin Molly (Emma Roberts), obwohl er heimlich in sie verliebt ist. Von seinem Doppelleben ahnt sie nichts. Da bietet ihm sein Dealer Lionel (Curtis Jackson aka 50 Cent) eine neue Droge an: Twelve wirkt wie ein Mix aus Kokain und Ecstasy und macht sofort abhängig. White Mike ist die Sache zu heiß, harte Drogen will er nicht verticken. Doch sein verstrahlter Cousin Charlie (Jeremy Allen White) will sich den Stoff auf eigene Faust besorgen und wird dabei ermordet. Ausgerechnet Mikes bester Freund Hunter (Philip Ettinger) gerät unter Mordverdacht. Währenddessen bereiten sich alle auf die große Geburtstagsfeier von It-Girl Sara (Esti Ginzberg) vor: Es ist die Party, bei der man dabei sein muss. Aber nicht jeder ist erwünscht, und was rauschhaft beginnt, endet in einer Katastrophe... (Tobis)

By focusing the story on a late high school community, the film held out hope that Schumacher would remember his first major directorial achievement, the bravura frat-pack flick St. Elmo's Fire. Unfortunately, however, the septuagenarian director past his creative zenith couldn't find the energy, not to mention that he was apparently no longer able to relate to the transformation of high school communities and their problems. After all, a quarter century has passed since Elmo. Twelve contains virtually every flaw and crutch in the narrative: omniscient voice overs, flashbacks, a huge number of characters who are not sufficiently developed, relationships between characters that are supposed to emerge from one characterization scene, it's not clear by the end what the film is actually about, and whatever starting point you choose in spite of all this comes off as horribly banal. A tragic fail.
