Ten-year-old Edward lives in his family-run retirement home. While his mother struggles to keep the family business afloat and his father copes with the onset of a mid-life crisis, Edward leads an increasingly lonely existence until he meets Clarence (Michael Caine), a retired magician and grieving widower, who refuses to give in gracefully to old age. Wenn in einem noch so dummen Streifen Michael Caine erscheint, ist für mich der Film dank seiner Anwesenheit immer ein bisschen erträglicher. Daraus mache ich kein Geheimnis. Deshalb habe ich bei Is Anybody There? damit gerechnet, dass es sich wahrscheinlich um keinen außergewöhnlichen Film handeln wird (er wird hier nicht besonders gut bewertet) und dass es einfach ein nächstes Puzzleteil der Filmografie meines Lieblingsschauspielers sein wird. Und wissen Sie was? Der Film ist wirklich nichts Besonderes, aber ich fand ihn sehr angenehm. Er ist gleichermaßen nett wie traurig oder witzig. Caine (der wieder absolut alles mit nur einem Blick spielen kann) hat in dem kleinen Jungen einen ziemlich fähigen Schauspielkollegen gefunden. Das Haus voller alter Menschen, welches der Sensenmann besucht, war interessant depressiv. Manchmal kam es mir wie ein Gegenteil des Waisenhauses im Film Gottes Werk und Teufels Beitrag vor. Der Film ist weder zu lang noch zu kurz. Das Drehbuch arbeitet mit dem schwarzen Humor so, dass sich niemand beleidigt fühlen kann. Der Film ringt dem Publikum keine überflüssigen Emotionen ab, er schafft es aber, eine menschliche Wärme zu verbreiten. Meine dreieinhalb Sterne runde ich auf. Mit einem anderen Schauspieler in der Hauptrolle hätte ich es aber nicht getan.

Maybe I'm just getting tired of the typical British dramedy formula, but Is Anybody There? felt like the same old mix I've seen in so many other British films. It’s got the usual lineup of grumpy, cynical characters—even Michael Caine falls into that category here—and a predictable routine that has a few amusing moments but drags for long stretches. As always with British films, the concept had potential, but something about the execution just didn’t click with me. I didn’t feel any real emotional impact, and overall, it left me a bit cold.

Parkinson with Parkinson’s in a movie which, with its cynical introduction, raises the faint hope that this could perhaps be a toned-down version of Harold and Maude. However, this feeling disappears all too soon and it descends into being a regular, hundred-times-seen friendship classic that sadly plays your heartstrings.
