Genius mathematician and high school teacher Ishigami Tetsuya has taken a fancy to Hanaoka Yasuko, a lady working at a bento store. He learns that Yasuko and her daughter have killed a person and helps the two of them to construct the perfect alibi. The police investigation runs into difficulty and detective Kusanagi Shunpei seeks the advice of his friend, the brilliant physicist Yukawa Manabu. Ishigami is Yukawa's college friend. An excellent affair, consistently and effectively alternating the perspectives of the three central characters to successfully conceal the true shape of the plot until the very end, while keeping curiosity and anticipation at 100%. At the beginning, we may be struck by the cynical layout of the conflict between love and rationality, but the way the film gradually treats this issue without forcibly drawing attention to it or distracting from the characters' interactions regarding the detective case makes it, in my eyes, one of the finest films of 2008; exactly the kind Hollywood is missing for its moral humility and authorial freshness. 90%

It wasn't bad at all – interesting plot, subtle twists that keep you glued to the screen despite their subtlety, making you wonder what's next. Although it is accompanied by scenes that I would have cut or omitted (in other words, the running time is once again a bit much, but maybe the Japanese don't know how else to do it in film), the final denouement will surprise some. We kept guessing throughout the film we how it was going to turn out, but this variant had never occurred to us. Even so, the ending is slightly unsatisfying – the women are hysterical and have to ruin everything, a ruination that applies above all to the policewoman who just had to open her mouth... a detective show of strong feelings and brilliant mind; a weaker 4 stars.
