Kurz vor Kriegsende wird Hildegard Knef (Heike Makatsch) auf der Schauspielschule in Babelsberg angenommen. Gegen den Widerstand ihrer Mutter (Johanna Gastdorf) bleibt Else Bongers (Monica Bleibtreu), die Leiterin des Ufa-Besetzungsbüros, bei ihrer Entscheidung, Hilde eine Chance zu geben, und wird ihre Mentorin. Trotz einer Affäre mit Reichsfilmdramaturg Ewald von Demandowsky (Anian Zollner) macht die ehrgeizige Hilde nach dem Krieg in Berlin Karriere. Der aus dem amerikanischen Exil zurückgekehrte jüdische Filmproduzent Erich Pommer (Hanns Zischler) holt sie zum Film und macht sie mit "Die Mörder sind unter uns" zum neuen Star des Nachkriegsfilms. Nach drei unproduktiven Jahren in Hollywood kehrt sie nach Berlin zurück. 1950 spielt sie mit der Titelrolle in "Die Sünderin" auch die Hauptrolle im ersten Sexskandal der jungen BRD. Nach einer gescheiterten Ehe geht Hilde erneut in die USA und macht am Broadway Karriere. Als sie Ende der 50er Jahre nach Deutschland zurückkehrt, erfindet sie sich als Chansonsängerin neu. (ZDF)

Up to this point, I had no idea about the existence, let alone the acting and singing fame of Hildegard Knef, and I must admit that even my encounter with this autobiographical film did not convince me that it would be any sort of a loss or mistake. Not even the big eyes of the otherwise sympathetic Heike Makatsch worked on me, no matter how hard she tried. I remained indifferent to her character until the end, and I consider the film to be a mere filler of broadcasting time. Overall impression: 40%.

I have to say I was considering giving the film three stars. Mostly because I didn’t really know the actress Hildegard Knef until this movie, so I didn’t know what to expect. However, for a biopic made with precision it definitely deserves the extra star. I really liked Heike Makatsch’s take on her character. Add in the great atmosphere of the World War, then the post-war period and finally Hollywood. It would be foolish to rate it lower. This biopic is a properly made movie with all the good, but also bad, that this genre entails.
