New Czech short horror movie the Séance narrates the story of three people, who are trying to find the fortune of a deceased baroness through a spiritualistic séance. But things will go a bit differently than they planned… The cast consists of famous Czech actors Klara Jandova, Zdenek Julina and Pavel Novy in his first movie role after two years of serious illness.
Film shooting at the 16th century palace lasted for ten days and was accompanied by a series of mysterious accidents. The director hired a consultant on magic and magical language, so every word you hear in the movie is by the book. That´s why everyone in the crew was alarmed when lighting fell or some of the props collapsed all by themselves during the ritual incantations. (Verleiher-Text)

Considering the initial mixed reviews, Seance turned out to be a pleasant surprise. It’s well executed and it’s clear the director knows the classic elements of the genre, the jump-scares are effective, better than in many feature films from abroad, it could be said. Naturally, it’s not something that will make your jaw drop, but if I look at the state of today’s professional Czech horror (and cinema as a whole), I can’t ask from a student film more than what this one delivers. I’m very happy to give it a fourth star.

Die Geschichte ist nicht besonders originell (sogar Draculův švagr hatte ein paar einfallsreichere Folgen), aber was soll’s. Séance wurde nämlich sehr gut aufgenommen. Für die Verhältnisse von Studentenfilmen definitiv gut. Die Stimmung ist hervorragend, die Schreckmomente sind erstklassig, dazu eine solide Musikbegleitung… Der Film bekommt von mir dreieinhalb Sterne, die ich aufrunde. Ich bin nämlich immer irgendwie abartig glücklich, wenn ich bei einem Film, der Angst und Schrecken auslösen soll, Angst und Schrecken empfinde. Séance sollten Sie sich spät in der Nacht mit Kopfhörern anschauen.
