Marvel's The Avengers

I went to the 9:30 pm screening, after a very physically exhausting day, and I told myself that if this film manages to entertain me enough to keep me awake, I will give it five stars, and here they are. Now seriously: Avengers is a perfect blockbuster with great sense of humour, incredible chemistry between the characters and amazing action. If you are not looking for the brooding of Batman or the ambition of the Wachowskis (or anything “more”), and you only want good fun at the cinema, you can’t do better than this, it has no competition among the light summer blockbusters. And I’m saying this as someone who didn’t like too much the previous Marvel films and is also not a member of Whedon’s fan club. But there’s one little quibble: Next to the other superheroes, Black Widow and Hawkeye look so out of place and meek. And it’s also weird to see Auntie Robin in SHIELD’s control centre. In the weight class of superheroes who, instead of psychotherapy sessions where they spend two hours figuring out their superhero identity, manage everything by letting their powers speak, preferably in a pretty fierce, loud, and explosive way, the Avengers actually have no competition far and wide. For the first hour, they tease each other with humor, and they use it together against the alien invasion. Kudos to Whedon for dividing up the roles precisely and giving everyone exactly the space they need. Most importantly, it's all done inventively (camera tricks) and it’s imaginatively (funny inserts even into the serious scenes) shot. [My only criticism goes to Loki. Hiddleston isn't so bland anymore because now he’s a charismatic bastard whose character portrayal by the writers falls a little short. Edit: After the second screening, this criticism no longer applies either.] (04.05.2012)

Die Idee, dass der Film den Bedarf meidet, sich wie ein Wilder zu entlarven, weil er auf die Zuschauer zählt, die die vorigen Filmfolgen gesehen haben, ist vollends unsinnig - zum einen kommt man ohne ein kurzes Exposé von Hawkeye und Natasha nicht aus; zweitens ist es notwendig, dass die Herren der Schöpfung ihre kleinen stählernen / göttlichen / seroiden kleinen Jungs da unten miteinander vergleichen, um festzustellen, wer den den sprichwörtlichen größeren hat... Damit verbringen wir ungefähr die Hälfte des Films, und sobald denn jeder jedem eine Ohrfeige verpasst und Captain America und belehrt hat, dass es nur einen Gott gibt, folgt endlich eine Teamaktion. Dafür, wie viele Minuten wir bis dato hinter uns haben, sind wir nicht in der Lage zu sagen, dass wir vollständige Informationen hinsichtlich der Fragen, wer, was, warum und für wie viel, aber sobald Whedon damit beginnt, Tonnen an Stahl zu verbiegen und eine Aufnahme hinter der anderen zu machen, wo wir nicht sagen können, welche denn spektakulärer iss - na ja, eigentlich ist´s ja auch egal. Außerdem beginnen die Charaktere zu buchstabieren (was durch das tschechische Synchrondubbing leider etwas untergeht), der Captain macht ein wenig Mumpitz (eben ein wenig, damit er das Kästchen, welches stellvertretend für ein sprichwörtliches blaues Leben des größten Nice-Guys steht, cancelln kann) und The Avengers bieten genau das, warum sie in die "Marvel"-Sparte passen. Eine heldenhafte Abendparty, durchschaubar, übersichtlich, glattpoliert und schwer. Sie werden es vielleicht übersehen, dass die gesamte Geschichte ja eigentlich eine tragisch mechanische Übernahme des "klassischen invasiven Schlamassels“ ist, ohne grundlegend, zur Heldenmythologie beizutragen. Die andere Hälfte stellt dann schlichtweg das pure Vergnügen an einem enorm pompösen Spektakel dar. Jedoch ich kann den Eindruck nicht loswerden, dass eine ganze Hälfte lang im Films überhaupt nichts passiert ist und wir über die Charaktere am Ende nicht mehr wissen als zuvor. Ich neige dazu zu sagen, dass Whedon seine Arbeit durch vorsichtiges Manövrieren gemeistert hat. Ein ganz ordentlicher Spaß, aber als separate fiktive Welt machts´ nicht viel Sinn - was dem ersten Iron-Man und teilweise Thor gelungen ist, schrumpfte hier zu einem Freundschaftsmatch voller Tricks, krasser Moves sowie Geschicklichkeitswettbewerbe zusammen. Undemanding, popcorn paint by numbers with clear contours which begin to turn pastel green only after they line up. The Avengers Assemble is quality craftsmanship which unfortunately pays dearly for having just routine action (the first “teaser" part is markedly better than the second) and zero “emotional involvement" of either the viewer or the characters. The whole thing rests on the shoulders of the Stark - Thor - Banner trio and the remaining characters are either a necessary evil (Capt. America) or there to make up numbers. And also a proper baddy is sorely lacking; Loki is outstanding, but he’s more an amusing stooge than an arch-villain. As far as Marvel team productions are concerned, the movie versions of X-Men play in a much higher league. (02.05.2012)

It wasn't until the final credits started rolling that I realized that many people's dreams had just come true. For the viewers who sensed from the end of the first Iron Man that this superhero gathering would be epic to the top floor of Stark Tower. For Joss, who had been smiling under his (fully geeky) beard for so long until he brought us the essence of himself. And last but not least, to all the Whedon fans who supported the creator as an unrivaled storyteller for many years. And then, in one of the most-watched movies of recent years, he proved them absolutely right. The Avengers have Stark's audacity, Cap's courage, Thor's rudeness, and Hulk's titanic power. And they mix everything into a cocktail that is almost impossible to drink in one go. Trying to catch all the quotes, breathtaking action scenes, or meticulously crafted details was simply impossible. It wasn't until the second viewing that I realized that Whedon thoroughly played with his Marvel toy and then lent it to us, ordinary mortals. The fact that he created a perfectly cinematic comic book, nurturing it minute by minute like a mirror of the genre, is another matter. (08.05.2012)

Everything you would expect and more. Compact fun which, if only for its ratio to the action, makes this twice as good as all of the preceding solo movies. Great chemistry between all of the characters. And the best one is The Hulk. That's my secret, Captain. I'm always angry. (04.05.2012)

Da ich allenfalls ein Fan des Typen mit Stars and Stripes bin, hatte ich insgesamt nicht so viel Spaß. Aber klar, Natasha, der neu besetzte Bruce und der Sprüche klopfende Tony und seine Pepper, die sind nicht schlecht. Aber das Ganze ist so ein einfacheres Malbuch im Stil von Hulk, der sich mit nichts Mühe machte... (03.09.2012)

Next to Batman and Watchmen, probably the best comic book adaptation. A film full of fun, thrilling action, wit, polished dialogues, self-reflection, and a fantastic cast; everything a first-class blockbuster should have, and with an incredibly precise tuning of the individual ingredients. The last time something similarly perfect within its genre was seen in cinemas was 1996 when Ronald Emmerich directed Independence Day. (15.05.2012)

Avengers wird immer besser. Die Enttäuschung vom Kinobesuch lässt dank der DVD langsam aber sicher nach. Ein Problem habe ich eigentlich nur mit Hawkeye (bzw. mit seinem steifen Darsteller) und damit, dass der Film in manchen Passagen atemberaubend wirken möchte und sich gleichzeitig über sich selbst lustig machen will. Das ist ein seltsames Spiel, das ich noch nicht akzeptiert habe. (14.05.2012)

Yes, the story is sterile and stale, the emotions non-existent and the pace of the narrative is rather erratic, inflated at the end into a charmless presentation of risk-free superhero action. But it doesn't matter, The Avengers is still the chosen one, a film that represents the most basic Marvel idea of colourful comic book characters quite perfectly and surgically accurate. All the clichés are deliberate, skilfully adapted to build an adequately simple plot that best suits this kind of team-ups and that doesn't unnecessarily distract from its primary intention: the entertaining interaction between the diverse heroes, the development of their relationship and the careful interplay with previous (and of course future) instalments of the Marvel Universe. It’s a great COMIC-BOOK movie, with utterly likeable archetypal characters, a charismatic villain, and effects like something out a fan's wildest wet dreams. It doesn't play on civility like Nolan, it plays only for the devoted fans of Tony Stark, Captain America, Thor or the Hulk, and in a perfectly balanced and precise way, as if all those legendary books suddenly came to life and took to the streets of Manhattan, without any questions or delays. The actors are without exception excellent, with the cherry on top in the form of the incredibly sexy Scarlett, before whom, as an enemy I would have knelt down on the spot and desperately cried "Capture me, Lord, capture me!" :)) 90% (24.05.2012)

During one month, I witnessed that the cinema still has something to amaze with. The film "Prci, prci, prcičky: Školní sraz" completely knocked me out, and now "Avengers". Well, to tell the truth, I enjoyed "Prcičky" even more and I left with a feeling that I usually don't have in the cinema. But the impressions from "Avengers" are very similar. I went to the Czech premiere with subtitles a bit reserved because I was afraid that it would just be a big hype, but the rest would be disappointing. I didn't have to worry. Joss Whedon, the screenwriter, director, but also a comic book creator and especially a comic book enthusiast, probably created his best work. His TV productions are literally cult classics ("Buffy" or "Firefly"), but it will probably be the comic book that he will always be remembered for. He was offered to make a film about the Avengers, the team of the greatest Marvel superheroes, and that's exactly what he did. A great film about great heroes. An entertaining team film whose success is primarily based on funny lines, interactions between the individual Avengers, and rich visual effects. What’s more, it’s no small bit of redemption that Captain America somehow feels more complete in the context of the Avengers, and that his character doesn't come across as comically as he did in The First Avenger. A viewer unfamiliar with the world of the MCU and its previous films need not despair, as The Avengers works quite well as a standalone film. That said, some familiarity with the previous films will certainly enhance the overall experience. If you have a close relationship with the Marvel universe, it's highly unlikely that you won't like The Avengers. From my perspective, it is a slightly overrated film, but that didn't keep me from giving it a fairly high rating, because it's simply entertaining. (11.07.2017)

Um ehrlich zu sein, habe ich nicht im Geringsten erwartet, dass es so toll sein wird. Schon gar nicht, dass ich die Hälfte des Films nur am lachen sein werde wegen all den geilen Anspielungen, Gags und der gegenseitigen Stänkereien. Es ist aber definitiv nicht nur eine Komödie. Der Film strahlt auch eine starke Atmosphäre aus, und mehrere Szenen prägen sich dem Zuschauer kompromisslos ein. Ich war erstaunt, wie sehr der Film an manchen Stellen eher an Science-Fiction oder eine ferne Zukunft erinnert. Ein dreifaches Hoch auf Regisseur Whedon, der sich als Hit erwiesen hat und in Zukunft sicherlich noch viele weitere Beiträge der Kinowelt leisten wird. (04.05.2012)
