Distinctive characters, a kind view of their dreams, worries, and transgressions, which none of us can avoid, an original plot… This is the prepossessing setting of a comedy that takes us to Zvěstov, a picturesque Moravian village where the men like to re-enact a famous Napoleonic battle. They do it with such enthusiasm that they almost cause a tragedy and turn the romantic wedding of Tomas and a beautiful French girl, Claire, into bloodshed. In the end, everything is resolved with common sense and humour, but mostly with ordinary happiness and love, which drowns out all the sabre-rattling and is more powerful than dreams about fame. Ich hatte irgendwie das Gefühl, dass sich in The Wedding on Battle Field außer Josef Somr niemand bemüht hat, zu spielen. Der Film wollte eine Komödie sein. Es ist ihm aber auf eine sehr traurige Art und Weise nicht gelungen. Es wirkt so, dass Dušan Klein ein paar Schauspieler*innen gefunden hat, die gerade nichts zu tun hatten (und wenn doch, dann ist es irgendeine Serie gewesen, in der sie gerade nicht gebraucht wurden), dass er mit ihnen ein paar Wochen in Mähren bei Bolek Polívka verbracht hat, dass sie vor der Kamera herumgeblödelt haben… Und bald war der Film fertig. Na ja, aber warum hatten nur sie Spaß? Warum amüsieren sich auch nicht die Zuschauer*innen? Und was ist mit der wiederholten Werbung für die Dachdeckung, deren Namen ich nicht erwähnen werde, weil sie schon genug propagiert wurde? Ach ja. Um aber nicht nur zu meckern – das, was Polívka über Frau König sagt, fand ich ziemlich lustig.

When during the zero years some piece of domestic comedy misery didn't succeed and quickly disappeared, a big betrayal could be expected. And The Wedding on the Battlefield was exactly such a betrayal. Nothing happened in it, nothing big or small mattered (the main plot about Polívka wanting the leading role in the local masquerade is embarrassing) and a few embarrassing actors and beautiful unused actresses made a living out of it. The viewer should feel almost guilty at the end for not liking the film, because everything in it is so non-violent, lively, and true at its core. It's not. If it were something embarrassing, trying and not working, I might be more forgiving. But when it really isn't about anything, there's no reason.
