Wesley Gibson ist ein harmloser Büroangestellter, dessen Leben aus den Fugen gerät, als er plötzlich, nach dem Mord an seinem Vater, die atemberaubende Fox kennenlernt. Sie eröffnet Wesley, dass er genau wie sein Vater zuvor ein Auftragskiller mit besonderen Fähigkeiten ist... Wesley Gibson ist ein harmloser Durchschnittstyp, der von seiner Freundin betrogen und von seinem Chef tyrannisiert wird. Eines Tages trifft er auf die schöne Fox, die sein Leben komplett auf den Kopf stellt: Denn sie behauptet, dass sein seit seiner Geburt verschollener Vater ein Auftragskiller sei, der vor Kurzem selbst einem Mordkomplott zum Opfer gefallen ist. Nun soll sich Wesley an dem Mörder seines Vaters rächen und wird darüber hinaus vom Partner seines Vaters ermuntert, in dessen Fußstapfen zu treten. Fox wird seine Lehrmeisterin und bildet Wesley für eine Bruderschaft von Auftragskillern aus. Ihr Credo: Tötet man eine einzelne Person, können Tausende gerettet werden. Angestachelt von dem festen Willen, seinem langweiligen Leben zu entfliehen und den Tod seines Vaters zu rächen, geht Wesley auf das Angebot ein. Sein erster Auftrag führt ihn zu Cross, dem angeblichen Mörder seines Vaters. Wesleys findet ihn und verletzt ihn tödlich. Kurz vor seinem Tod erklärt Cross ihm jedoch, dass er in Wahrheit sein leiblicher Vater ist, während Sloan Fox damit beauftragt, Wesley aus dem Weg zu räumen. Wesley kann dem Mordanschlag jedoch entfliehen und erfährt, dass die Bruderschaft in Wahrheit aus reiner Profitgier tötet. Er sinnt auf Rache... (RTL II)

Die erste halbe Stunde habe ich mir gesagt, dass das wirklich ein Action Film ist, dann wurde die ganze Handlung flacher und ich langweilte mich fast, doch durch eine wesentliche Wendung in der Handlung ging es dann in ein großes Finale, das meine Bewertung wohl letztlich erhöhte. Auch wenn ich zwischen drei und vier Sternen zögere. Ganz sicher hat mich Timur mehr verzaubert als in Wächter der Nacht und James McAvoy gewann mich schon vor den Dreharbeiten mit der Aussage, lieber würde er seine Exkremente essen als ins Fitnessstudio zu gehen. Das Ganze ist ziemlich übertrieben, irreal und für Physiker wohl äußerst leidvoll, doch zur Unterhaltung mit Cola und Popcorn in der Hand hervorragend. Und ist etwa schon ein zweiter Teil in Aussicht?!?

Definitiv effektvoll, und zwar SEHR. Schauspielerisch interessant. Es ist aber eine Arbeit eines Regisseurs, der den Film mit Werbung verwechselt. Eines Regisseurs, der nicht in der Lage ist, eine Filmgeschichte so zu erzählen, dass ich sie wirklich interessant finde. Sorry.

A very pleasant surprise. Great actors, good action, not nearly as bad a script as I expected and above all a generous portion of directorial ideas. Too bad about the lower budget and thus unimaginative production design and maybe too frantically filmed fights. Anyway, an enjoyably anarchic extravaganza that pulls no punches.

Bekmambetov picks up in Hollywood where he left off in Russia. He just lovingly wrapped the "nothing" plot in a screaming visual package, using A-list actors instead of ribbons. Morgan mentors on a flywheel (not meant in a bad way), Angelina pouts her lips seductively again after a long time, and James boldly shows his ticket to the acting elite club of his generation. I didn't catch on to the anarchy that much (I’m interested in the comics) and the comparison of forces with The Matrix also seems quite wrong to me. Still, I’m definitely giving it a thumbs up, particularly in that Len Wiseman should get one of the DVDs so he can see how to film "over the top" action without necessarily looking stupid. 4 ½.

Or: How the Russians (I know, he’s from Kazakhstan, but still) pays Czechoslovakia a “friendly" visit, like they did in 1968, this time for American money. I’ve liked Bekmambetov ever since Night Watch, but back then he didn’t manage to keep total control. Then, in Day Watch, he let go of the reins far too much. At the beginning of Wanted, my hopeful smile was wiped from my face by the opening action scene. It’s a long time since I saw such dumbness and pure awkwardness on the silver screen. It’s just far too much. I awaited in horror what was to come. But then it managed to push itself off the bottom of the anti-talent pool to incredible quality. Even the Palahniukesque toiling of the main “pimp" indicated that Timur and his gang might manage after all. And then it really gets going, one idea after another. This is an inaccessible action movie in all ways, despite having a functional story, good actors and even that stagnating Danny Elfman is on his way to the top again. And last but not least, you have to get used to an approach where loads of teenagers are fondling their darlings in the street. I mean pistols, not girls. This is a stylish celebration of weapons. But you know what? The arms industry couldn’t hope for a better commercial.
