Der Hardwareladenbesitzer Roy, 50, unternimmt mit seiner jüngeren Frau Jessie, 30, nach einer kirchlichen Wohltätigkeitsveranstaltung in China eine Reise mit der transsibirischen Eisenbahn. Eine sorgfältig aufgebaute Spannung und Beunruhigung in einem sehr stimmungsvollen Milieu, welches für einen Thriller-Genrefilm unüblich ist. Die Schauspielleistungen und die Regie sind ausgezeichnet. Wenn das Drehbuch, das sehr gut mit der Psychologie der Figuren spielt, im Rahmen der Genre-Regeln etwas Innovatives präsentiert hätte, hätte ich dem Film 4* gegeben.

One clear good thing is the gradually growing chilling atmosphere that permeates the whole film. This is not only due to the engaging cold Siberian landscape, which gives the film the right drive, but also to the slowly escalating story, starting with a major turning point about halfway through, which culminates in a fight for bare life and one brutal torture scene, which I found physically uncomfortable. Thanks to the good performances of the actors, I was interested in the fate of the protagonists, I lived with them and even envied them a bit the initial romance of travelling by train. Brad Anderson has done a good job, though in a slightly different way than others expected (see the reviews here).
